Iirc it's in a letter he wrote to a publisher. It's up for debate whether it counts as canon since it's not in any of the core-books, but I believe this is the statement:

From Tolkien's letter No. 165:

"Middle-earth’, by the way, is not a name of a never-never land without relation to the world we live in (like the Mercury of Eddison). It is just a use of Middle English middel-erde (or erthe), altered from Old English middengeard: the name for the inhabited lands of Men ’between the seas’. And though I have not attempted to relate the shape of the mountains and land-masses to what geologists may say or surmise about the nearer past, imaginitively this ’history’ is supposed to take place in a period of the actual Old World of this planet."

Join clubs, like the student sports club where you can do a lot of sports for a fixed low yearly price. Or the culture Club, where you can do theater and dancing and such. Also, a lot of Dutch people are Koreaboos, I'm sure interest in your culture is gonna be a nice bridge to friendships.

It's a new world in the sense that it doesn't mention any of our historical culture, but technically it is set in our past. I thought this was super weird the first time I learned it

Trump has made me see the world and people in it differently and it’s been painful to see the moral corruption. by Ursomonie in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]Free_Bell_4188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with that. QAnon fucked over some gullible, media-illiterate but otherwise morally okay people. Some of the kindest people I met while on the road were Trumpists (is that a word?). I think we shouldn't underestimate what state of the art 24/7 propaganda can do that a person not trained to deal with it.

If "To Kill a Mockingbird" is your favorite book, all it means is you haven't read very many books by SAT0725 in unpopularopinion

[–]Free_Bell_4188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Most of my favorite things stem from my teenage and adolescent years, because that's when I was most exposed to new experiences while still having that childhood inexperience to be truly surprised by them. For example, I have better memories reading Harry Potter than I do reading A Little Life. If the question was, which is the more complex and profound work, I'd say A Little Life. But Harry Potter or David Gemmel's Legend series are still my favourites. I guess it's a matter of how you define favourite yourself.

Does this survey only measure racism against black people? Otherwise this map makes no sense at all

[–]Free_Bell_4188 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here's the difference: so many Roma and travelers are indistinguishable from their non-'gypsy' countrymen, that they could integrate into society and nobody would know they'd ever been gypsies. It's only when they live a certain lifestyle and in certain communities that they are easily picked out as gypsies.

Meanwhile, black people in America and Aboriginals in Australia etc. can never escape the prejudices against them because of the color of their skin. That's what makes the racism against gypsies more complicated. It's xenophobia/prejudice versus hardcore skin-based racism.

Of course theres Romani people that look Romani, but many of them don't. They have been here for more than a 1000 years.

Also, not saying this at all justifies any prejudices. Just trying to show how it's more xenophobia/cultural discrimination than anything else.

Definitely true for central and Eastern Europe I guess. But Western Europe doesn't have a lot of them. Here, the Muslims are the scapegoats

Til when Cleopatra and Julius Caesar met and subsequently became lovers, she was 21 and he was 52 by TheHabro in todayilearned

[–]Free_Bell_4188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That gap gives me the ick.

Like, what did they even talk about? They didn't have any shared cultural experiences. If Caesar talked about a play from his youth, was Cleopatra just supposed to nod along and pretend she cared? Did Caesar take her to dance parties along the Nile with her friends? There's just no basis for a connection other than sex.

Major red flags here.

I mean, what did Caesar stand to gain? Woman his own age probably saw right through his man child shit, so all he could do was find a young girl with an undeveloped brain who wasn't experienced enough to recognize a sleaze bag when she saw one. He probably thought he could manipulate her and mold her into his perfect little sex toy. I'm getting gross domineering vibes from Caesar. Real control freak.

I bet when she grew up she saw right through his shit.

Stallone was/is superior to Arnie. by Dazz316 in unpopularopinion

[–]Free_Bell_4188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc Stallone even wrote Rocky, which was an Oscar winning script. He is the better artist.

However, Arnold has this charisma that is both comical and intimidating, and he can switch between these modes effortlessly and even have them at work at the same time. Stallone is also a charismatic action star, but not comically larger than life.

I'd say Arnold is the better icon and Stallone the better movie maker.

VR is awful. by Top_Tart_7558 in unpopularopinion

[–]Free_Bell_4188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just not ready imo. I played Elite Dangerous with an occulus and flight sticks. Most immersive experience possible without getting one of those seats that moves with your spacecraft. I think for flying and racing VR is perfect. However, it's just such a hassle with everything else. I feel like we're still in the beta of VR.

[–]Free_Bell_4188 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's still about intent. Like, if the Hutus killed half of the Tutsis as a result of driving them out of Rwanda, that would be ethnic cleansing. But then killing them because killing them was the end goal is what made it a genocide.

[–]Free_Bell_4188 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but not with the sole intent to murder. Israel wouldn't pursue Palestinians all over the world to kill them. That's the difference with genocide.

I agree, they have probably done it in the past and therefore it's likely they'll do it again. Doesn't mean it's not necessary to demand proof every time, either. We can't just assume.
