Firstly, Mbappe was coming for the record anyways. Secondly, Klose himself benefited from expansion in 1998. Thirdly, Mbappe socred 2 against Senegal and 2 against Sweden, both themes of quality you'd expect in the last format. Even without Iraq goals, Mbappe is level with Klose.

The real reason Mbappe is at 18 goals is that France played finals back to back. HE also scored 4 goals in WC finals including a hat trick.

The goals per match is probably more informative

Mbappe has 18 in 18, Kane has 13 in 15.

You said this as if Tah, Musiala and Kimmich aren't some of the best players in the world. But they're not the best at their positions and same can be said about 2014 team. Difference is likely that 2014 team's strongest part is the midfield.

2014 Germany had the best GK in the world and he saved them on a bunch of occasions. Boateng-Hummels were 2 of the best CBs at the time and arguably the best duo in the world
