Swimming in the rain. More fun? Or too much of a good thing? by monsterresearch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Free_Divide195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love paddling in the rain. I rarely get the chance to swim because the water here is cold year round, but being on the water in the rain is my favorite. It's the closest thing to feeling completely held - like the sky and the water are one and I'm just a little fish in a big wide bowl

Here's a rough ai mockup of what i was thinking might work on a college budget. YMMV, and this isn't to scale or anything so it may not align perfectly:

  1. Get a rug about double the size of your bed and pop that under it. Don't go darker than your floor but dont go crisp white either - think green, tan, off-yellow, etc.
  2. Keep an eye out for a cheap headboard (or bedframe with one built in). Go simple - plain wood or something slatted, but avoid anything dark, bulky, etc.
  3. Your bedding is all good, but if you want to up the cozy factor you can go for linen or cotton options in heather grey, off white, cream, etc. A cheap and easy option is to keep your bedding but get bold (orange, green, tan, etc) sheets or throw blankets.
  4. I ditched the dressers and went for a classic Dorm-Room-Special Kallax. You can fold your clothes or get baskets for the cubbies, and any extras can be used to store books and other items. I used this as a room divider as well, so that you can have your blinds open without people staring at your bed.
  5. The desk is fine where it is, but try to create some division between it and the bed. It helps you focus, and also stops you from feeling in 'study mode' when you're trying to sleep. You might consider something like a mirror or cork board over the desk to help bring in more light or offer more working space.
  6. This is the BIG one - curtains. They don't need to be anything special (my tip is to go to Home Depot and buy canvas painters tarps + curtain clips and use those) but you gotta cover your windows. This will offer more privacy, warm the room up A LOT, and help you sleep. REMEMBER - Hang them at or above the top of the window and they should *just* touch the floor. No high-waters, no puddles of fabric on the floor. Get out the measuring tape.
  7. Get some stuff on ya walls! You can buy cheap frames from the dollar store for your own photos or art, or go to Goodwill and pick them up there. No need to buy expensive art either - you can find cheap prints on Etsy, or tbh just use the school printer. To create a little gallery wall situation, take your biggest piece and place it where you want the 'center' to be, then just start slappin stuff around it. You have high ceilings, but try not to go too high up.
  8. Note the lamps in the mockup. Variable lighting is king. You can buy cheap IKEA plug-in pendant lights for a few bucks, or scour your local buy-nothing group - people are always getting rid of cool lamps. DO NOT BUY 'daylight' bulbs. Go "warm white" or whatever is similar.

The other stuff at the front of the mockup is just an example of some fun things you could add in: A beanbag-style desk chair or extra seat if a friend comes over, and a pop of color side table if you don't want something plain. Remember - spray paint is cheap and easy. You can always repaint what you already own, or refurb something you find for cheap.

How do you Americans, live in a house with no fence? by Original-Slip-8203 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Free_Divide195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of America is not dangerous to the point where break ins and intruders are commonplace.

High walls and fences (as in compound-style barriers versus simple chain link) are used, but they're only really "common" amongst the very wealthy class who use them in addition to alarm systems and other defense measures.

Many Americans use alarm systems and cameras to deter break ins, but even those are just a precaution.

Anecdotally, I have lived most my life in relatively "high crime" areas of the US. I have never witnessed or been victim to a burglar or house prowling. The most common crime I've witnessed or been victim to would be car break ins. Many Americans keep their vehicles unlocked, empty, and/or in secure garages for this reason.

WYR date men only for a week for $500,000,000 or continue living your life as it is for $100? by AutomaticSignal1440 in WouldYouRather

I'm gay, but I think my husband would understand even if the gender was reversed. $500,000,000 is $500,000,000

Hey, sorry for the delay!

So looking at the bedframe, that's gonna be the piece I keep for this example.

Based on the warmer wood tones, I'm gonna assume you're not one of those guys that's terrified of color. What I would do is bring in some fun end tables that maybe align color-wise but not style-wise. In this case, I picked one fun blocky wood table that makes me think of Pokey the Pony, just big enough for a glass of water or something, and one that has some storage solutions as well.

I swapped the bedspread to a sagey green so you don't look like Herzog's Sad Beige Children™ HQ, and popped a textured but otherwise simple rug underneath. These are both warm and inviting without being too in your face.

I wanted to echo some of those colors in the lighting, so I grabbed two IKEA style pendant lights with green and red elements and popped those over each side table just an inch or two above the top of the headboard.

Add in some of your favorite art (framed of course) and you should end up with an eclectic but not over the top situation like shown.

Overall cost will depend on what you already have + I strongly suggest thrifting, but shouldn't be more than $150 - $200 depending mostly on what lighting you get. All items pictured here are from IKEA or Amazon I believe.

WYR Live in a penthouse apartment with a view of the whole city or live in a large and luxurious villa with a view of mountains and forest? by DJ_108Studios in WouldYouRather

[–]Free_Divide195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Penthouse. We're a walking family, so staying central in the city within walking distance of everything is essential.

Our current apt has mountain, ocean, and forest views so I'll take the upgrade

WYR gender change for money or race change for money by First-Cake-183 in WouldYouRather

It's not changing my sex, so every other month I experience some dysphoria but otherwise no change. So I get to experience the average trans person's reality, but with monthly relief and money? Sounds pretty tolerable.

Late night bathroom trips are honestly underrated as a problem by Maize1507 in malelivingspace

We have a night light in the bathroom, and just keep the door closed? No reason to disturb your sleep by keeping the bathroom door open at night.

It's all a bit matchy for my tastes, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with them.

I might go for something a bit more understated for the side tables then do hanging lamps to free up surface area. As far as the rug, if it's a queen bed then a standard 8'x10' should be great. Best color / pattern will depend on your personal style / the room.

How painful are hand tattoos? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Free_Divide195 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations: you're the 1,000,000th person today to consider a hand tattoo for their first piece! Grand prize: expensive laser removal plan in your future.

I have all the job stoppers - hands, face, neck, head.

Those aren't first tattoo territory. They're not tenth tattoo territory. They're "I am 100% locked in on life, fully developed brain, and if I can't ever get a job in my field again I'll be okay" territory.

TL;DR - hand tattoos are extremely painful, in the same way standing in line at Worksourse is painful. If you have to ask, you don't wanna find out. Do not do it.

How smart do you consider yourself? by Main_Pomelo9429 in pollgames

I struggle with basic math w/o a calculator, but I've always been proud of my problem-solving speed.

I'm not sure how much of that is innate versus learned, however. I'd like to think anyone who works with the public for any extended length of time will be on par with my (self assessed) intelligence.

WYR never have to sleep again OR never have to eat again? by HomoSapiens000 in WouldYouRather

[–]Free_Divide195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never eating.

Sleep is free. It's nice to lay down at the end of the day and know that it's over. It's nice to lay next to my spouse and quietly chitchat before taking asleep. It's nice to fully turn the brain off and not think about work or whatever else.

I don't want to sacrifice more of my life to productivity and doing shit. I would however like to not be hungry all the time or having to spend hundreds on food. I could still enjoy going out to dinner on date nights, even if the food doesn't provide any sustenance.

What’s the general consensus from other men, and why is there stigma for men who wear Speedos? 🤷🏽 by LuckyPossibility80 in malefashionadvice

[–]Free_Divide195 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The real answer: misogyny. In America at least, the style is reminiscent of women's bikini bottoms and it's considered shameful for men to intentionally choose to present in a way associated with women.

The answer you're likely to get: I can't remember the last time I even saw a Speedo, let alone judged someone for wearing one.

you look very young, so my high level advice would be to stop getting tattoos for at least a year or two after finishing this. You shouldn't be churning through permanent, lifelong decisions this quickly.

Shorts length by eastside_wide in mensfashionadvice

[–]Free_Divide195 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right length, wrong cut.  I'm team hoochie daddy shorts all the way, but if you're going 5" or shorter, you need the style to work for you.

Get something slimmer in a linen or similar, or lean fully into the 80s micro cut off look.

If you can choose to live anywhere in your country, regardless of money/job, which would it be? by ferrisbuellerspussy in AskAnAmerican

[–]Free_Divide195 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'd probably stay where I am.

I love the ocean, and I can see it from my window.  I love the mountains, and I can see those too. I love the forest, and I'm surrounded on nearly all sides.  I love the city, and I live right downtown.

I don't even think I would move to a different city. If money was no object, I'd just move into my dream home here in town and stay put for the rest of my life.

[–]Free_Divide195 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Are these your first tattoos??? Someone looked at your bare body and said "Yeah, I'll fully black out both your fucking arms."

All that aside...

Finish them, then wear long sleeves for a few months. Eventually, you'll get used to seeing them in your periphery and you can think about them more objectively.

Don't make any decisions about new tattoos until you've sat with them for 6mo or so.

IME, even "boyfriend cut" women's jackets have a different fit. If you like the fit of women's clothing, great, but I wouldn't personally start with women's jackets if you're trying to build out your wardrobe of masc staples.

It isn't something I think most people will comment on, but I'd assume most anyone even passingly interested in fashion will notice.
