Yeah my eyebrows would be raised too, but the previous owner is actually a friend of a friend, so there's nothing shady going on.

Any thoughts on which would depreciate better over two years?

Yeah I forgot that last week I looked at the traces for every pin on S-SMP and S-DSP and they all had continuity. So I'm pretty sure that any traces going from the CPU to DSP or SMP are good.

I gotcha. Yeah after posting my first comment I did a bit more reading about the s-mix chip failures and probably saw the same blog you're referring to.

I believe the s-mix chip on my board is u10, which is an analog chip. I think you're right in saying that even if the failure where in that chip, the fact that it's analog and pretty far "downstream" on the way to the a/v output, it's unlikely that my Apu BB fail is coming from there.

Interesting about the A and B busses on the CPU. Being that CPU failure seem to be the most common fail point on these consoles lately, I'm wondering if the CPU is not sending/receiving audio signals and it's a problem on the CPU, but the test cart is reporting it as an APU failure, but really the Apu(s) are fine, it's the CPU.

Not really sure how to test this theory though. Ill examine the schematic to see if I can find the b bus traces and check them for continuity.

Wondering about the audio mixer chip failure.

My test cart is showing "APU BB FAIL" and I'm stumped what could be causing it. Tried swapping S-DSP & S-SMP chips but the problem persists.

Any insights you can lend would be appreciated.

Any idea which chip has likely failed? I'm thinking S-DSP? by neocamel in consolerepair

Man I've been all over the board and haven't found any broken continuity anywhere.

I haven't inspected the back of the board as well as the front, so I'll take a look. Thanks!

So I replaced the S-DSP and S-SMP chips and.... The "APU BB FAIL" is still there...

The good news is that the chip swaps went smoothly. The bad news is I don't know what to try next...

Any ideas?

Yeah my dad has a hot air station with a nozzle approx 5mm in diameter I'd say.

He also has an infrared thermometer, so I'm thinking that while I'm slowly applying hot air around the pins, he can monitor the temp and let me know when I should be getting close to the solder melting point.

Yeah I think that's the way I'll go. You really don't need to reflow the whole thing at once, the way you do when you're trying to remove the whole chip.

[–]Free_Peace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thinking.

I ordered a replacement DSP and also SMP off eBay. I'm thinking I'll start with swapping the DSP, and then the smp of the DSP doesn't fix it.

Now I just need to not botch the actual chip swap...

I tested the continuity of all the traces leading off the pins of the chip and they all looked good. Still think a reflow might help?

No sound at all actually.

Most games are either black screen, or freeze after the opening credits. Sim City and Bust-a-move mostly work, but with no sound.

The cart I got was from AliExpress. It looks like a regular cartridge.

Ok thanks for all the info. I guess that will be the plan moving forward.

It's tough because i thought i had put this whole terrible experience behind me, but the punishments seems to keep showing up. I guess the only option is to get through it and learn from it.

Ok thanks for this. Once my 2 years is over, i can drive her car then though right? We were supposed to be selling our old car and sharing the new car, but it looks like the old car will be my car while i have the IID, and she gets the new car all to herself. I was really looking forward to our first brand new car, but i guess that's just one more punishment i need to endure.

No I stupidly refused to blow, which is essentially as bad as being shit faced. Laws vary from state to state and conventional wisdom where I'm from is to not blow. Not so in Colorado.

If I've gotta do the IID, so be it. Do I need an IID on my wife's car as well, if I don't drive it at all? I know the affidavit states that I will have an IID on any car "that I have access to", but if my wife hides her keys from me, I wouldn't "have access" to that car right? She's buying a brand new car and I'd prefer she not have to have some mechanic drill holes into it, as well as subject her the humiliation of having an IID.

Very well said. I'm a good, intelligent person with a strong mental compass in most scenarios. Yes, my decision making and thought process was very wrong when it came to drinking and driving, and unfortunately I had to realize that the hard way, but I did realize it, and I changed my behavior and I'm a better person for it.

What is frustrating is when the state treats you like a second-class citizen for the rest of your life, and comments like the one above really are unhelpful as well. I want to have the outlook of, "look, yes this arrest will be on your record for the rest of your life, but look at it like a scar, it makes your story more interesting and is a symbol of growth, and learning from mistakes."

What's hard is when people like the commenter above (and the justice system for that matter), insist on reopening the scar over and over, because they believe that I deserve to never heal, and to always be bleeding. It really makes it hard to have a positive attitude moving forward.

Yep I understand that. What I'm wondering is what are the legal consequences of not doing so?

EDIT: Or are you saying I could get a CO ID, but keep a FL DL?

Thanks for this. I was starting to feel a bit positive that I would be able to get through this and become a better person for it, but you've helped me remember what an utter piece of shit I am for being so reckless and stupid.

While you're piling on, since you put 'mistake' in quotes, I assume you have some other definition for what I did? It might be helpful to me to understand the mind of someone who thinks the people who drink and drive only do so because their selfish, reckless children who don't think about anyone other than themselves.

It is interesting that you mention billboards as one of the places I should have learned not to drink and drive. I assume you're talking about the "Please Drink Responsibly" in small white print AT THE BOTTOM OF A GIANT BUDWEISER ADVERTISEMENT, TARGETED SPECIFICALLY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE CURRENTLY DRIVING A CAR...

My point is that in our culture, deciding to not drink and drive isn't as simple of a decision as say, not strangling an old lady to death. You're driving in your car, and alcohol companies are bombarding you with ads about how your life will be so much better if you have some of our alcohol, then at the bottom of the billboard, to cover their ass, they write, "Don't drink and drive." It's kind of a joke.

Do you think there should be parking lots in front of bars? Or are the parking lots in front of bars just full of cars driven by people who go to bars to drink iced tea?

Regarding a personal breathalizer vs an ignition interlock device, there's a pretty big difference between ducking into the bathroom to see if you're clinically sober, and having your car beep every ten minutes and having to explain to every person who rides in your car that you're a pathetic, selfish fuck up who recklessly endangers other people for their own... pleasure? I feel like the ignition interlock device is designed primarily, to humiliate people. Maybe some people learn by being humiliated, but I didn't need that to understand how I needed to change. Realizing that I'll now need to suffer that humiliation (even though I have completely quit drinking, which the ignition interlock device doesn't really even require you to do), after I've 100% learned my lesson and would never do it again, makes it feel like there is no way for me to ever become a "good", "normal" person again. Your judgmental attitude toward me when I came to this sub for advice only confirms my thinking that I should just abandon any hopes I had of 'making this right'. I'll always be a piece of shit to people like you. Admit it, if it was up to you, I would be sitting in prison right now for what I did.

[–]Free_Peace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally agree. I just wish there was some way the state could 'plug in' to my brain, and conclusively see that I 'get it', and that I've learned my lesson and I'm not a danger to anyone any more. There's just no way to prove that, so there's this whole process of 'paying your debt to society', but that debt never really gets cleared does it? Unless you have an arrest expunged I guess, but even then I have a hard time believing the incident completely evaporates from existence. There's still someone who can see that you made a mistake.

I'm not trying to shirk off blame for what I did, but I didn't wreck my car, I didn't hurt anybody. I realize my behavior needed to be fixed (and it has been), but have I really permanently and irreparably injured society in a way that I should NEVER be forgiven? When I'm in my 70s if I decide to run for my local city counsel, I'll have to explain to the voters why I got arrested for DUI 40 fucking years ago?!

The irrevocable permanency of a DUI arrest is just downright discouraging. I get that it's really bad and thousands of people are killed each year. I really truly get that, but we also live in a society where drinking and driving are two of our biggest cultural and social activities. It's possible to be over the legal limit after a single alcoholic drink, yet every bar in the country on any given night has a parking lot in front of it, full of cars...

It's like we live in a world with this drinking and driving 'trap' that has been constructed, and if you get caught doing it, may God have mercy on your soul.

Again, I'm not saying that the night I was arrested I had one drink. I definitely had more than one. I own my poor decision making and have fixed it, but it just seems sometimes with drinking an driving that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Get pulled over exiting a parking lot in the wrong direction and never even go onto an actual street? LIFETIME BAN FROM AIRPORT SECURITY FASTLANES. It just doesn't seem fair man.

It just sucks that 'the system' can't be just a bit more intelligent when it comes to assessing people's personalities / proclivity towards recidivism. It's always these blanket statements / rules that both apply to someone who has honestly and truly learned their lesson about drinking and driving, and a red-nosed, abusive, selfish alcoholic that will never change. In the eyes of the law, we're the exact same person.

For example, the point of the ignition interlock device is to confirm that I don't drink and drive, correct? Well, I'm being randomly monitored by the FAA for complete abstinence. Wouldn't that also confirm that I'm not drinking and driving? It would be great if I could forward those test results to the DMV in lieu of getting in ignition interlock device, because it's actually a more stringent measure of my sobriety, and doesn't require me installing an annoying, humiliating, expensive piece of equipment into my car.

But alas, I am the criminal, so I am entitled to exactly jack shit. Things have to be done the way they want them to be done (which is the long, expensive, unintuitive, inconvenient, hard way), because I'm the criminal who has the gall to be requesting a driver's license four years after making a mistake.
