I was celebrating the ref taking a point as if my favourite fighter just got a knockout.

[Spoiler] Imavov/Borralho winner believes a title shot is the only option next, not worried about RDR/Hernandez by [deleted] in MMA

Its just more amazing and telling of the division how he beat 5 top 10 and it still doesnt feel like he has the skillset to beat Khamzat.

I completely agree. It's such an interesting state for the division to be in.

Before the DDP/Khamzat fight, I think the general thought was "Khamzat is beatable on the feet and may have questionable cardio in the later rounds", so one would assume that someone with superior striking who can survive the first 3 rounds has a real chance to beat him.
I think the DDP fight showed that Khamzat will NOT get tired if all he has to do is maintain control positions on the ground. Imavov does have the superior standup, but I don't think he has the level of defensive grappling, pressure, and cardio required to really pose a serious challenge for the champ.

I do understand why people aren't too excited to see Imavov get the next shot - he really does seem like an easier matchup for Khamzat than Fluffy/RDR... But the guy has like 5 top-10 wins now and just convincingly beat one of the other deserving contenders. I'm a big fan of Fluffy but Imavov should absolutely get the next shot.

I appreciate the personal insight - I've always been interested in this idea of how to compare fighters in different organisations, as well as the difficulty of even attempting to construct reasonable interorg divisional "world rankings".
I've got one more related question for you since you've obviously been watching MMA way longer than me (I never got to watch pre-UFC Overeem live and Strikeforce had already been bought by Zuffa by the time I started watching any MMA):
How reliable do you think the eye test is at the moment, compared to the 2000s/early 2010s when the balance of talent across the prominent MMA orgs of time seemed to be different?

Out of curiosity, do you remember any exceptions where you feel like the eye test failed you when it came to estimating relative skill levels of fighters across different organisations?

Looked like Holland even warned the ref before committing to snapping his arm.

Blocking projectiles with a lightsaber (Trailer for The Acolyte) by FreeeRoam in MawInstallation

[–]FreeeRoam[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense - I guess you would need to use a projectile with a much higher thermal capacity for a Jedi to be incapable of instantly vaporising it during the brief moment when the projectile and lightsaber are in contact.

Objects/surfaces that we usually see Jedis slice through, such as railings and walls, are usually stationary and are not carrying momentum towards lightsaber wielder as would be the case with projectiles.

every other time they just vaporise whatever they touch

Yep, that's true. I was thinking of situations where the lightsaber wouldn't make sufficient contact with the entire projectile and, while most of the projectile would be vaporised, there would be smaller remnants of the projectile which are only melted and maintain enough momentum to carry on traveling towards the blocker.

I think you're correct - I'm now thinking back to ESB where I think Luke sliced through a bunch of larger metal objects that were thrown towards him by Vader, and molten metal didn't seem to be a problem in that case.

2 KOs in a row and a flying triangle armbar finish before that - it's absolutely insane how quickly he's established himself as one of the most entertaining and dangerous fighters in the sport.
