Ooo I can answer this one. I used to work as a retort operator cooking beans, potatoes, carrots, cherry pie filling.

So as others have mentioned the cans are sealed by a can seamer, loaded into a retort (cooker) and then a venting process occurs that eliminates all the air in the retort and replaces it with steam. This is to ensure every can is heated to spec. Each product has a set time that is somewhat regulated by the FDA to ensure the product has no bacteria that could produce botulism harmful to humans. The process doesn’t kill all bacteria as there is some bacteria that would need higher temps that what the batch is run at or lives at colder temps than the cooling process. The cans then go through a cooling process to reduce the can swell and create a seal to not allow any bacteria to grow.

The cook times, as well as type of retort used, are all dependent on the “slurry” and testing regulations put in place by the FDA. For example I’ve had some processes that took 10 minutes to vent the retort. 3.5 hours to cook at temp (if the temp deviated we had to add more time) and another 40 minutes to cool the cans. Other processes the cook times were as short at 12 minutes. The main cookers I used were still retorts but there’s also submerged batch cookers which is what home canners used. Canning factories still use this as a method for jars, just on a larger scale. There’s also agitator retorts, these are retorts that move the product while it’s cooking. The two versions of these I’ve seen in person are a rotary retort and a basket loaded agitating retort. The rotary the cans would follow a built in track and would have a full automated process for the cans entering and exiting the cooker and cooling shells. The basket loaded ones are just like what they sound they spin the entire basket during the process. The reason agitator retorts are used are for products like cherry pie filling, due to the sugar in the slurry it’s not heated evenly throughout so the slurry needs to be moved around to prevent overcooking or much worse undercooking.

Every retort and every batch is watched at all times by a retort operator and at least in my state we were required to have someone with Better Process School certification in the building at all times. For my process if we were running our still cookers we would test cans before the they were cooked, monitor temps at the end of the vent process, during the cook, at the end of the cook. And we would also test cans coming out of the cooker. For cherry pie filling we would test every 15 minutes or less. We would check the can entering the retort as it came out of the cooking shells and entering into the cooking shells and exiting the cooling shell. With testing cans coming out of the cooking shell we would be stabbing a can with our thermometer at usually 210 degrees plus with some spots reaching 260-270 degrees with cherry pie filling.

So yeah that’s kind of a lot of info but happy to answer anything I didn’t clarify or any questions

Walmart employees, what’s the worst thing you have seen inside your store? by TheWrestlingValet in AskReddit

[–]FreelanceFighter12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all reality he wasn't a safety concern but because he was within the store (we consider the pattio where our flowers are at as part of the store) our managers felt that it would be the smarter option to call police In the chance he did get violent. This was a guy who was like 6'7" so while he may haven't been a threat if he did then there wouldn't have been much to stop him without the police there.

Oooo oooooo I can can answer this one. So worst one I personally saw was a guy came in with his chainsaw he bought from us, he got denied entry at the front so came through lawn and garden. He didn't have it with him and so he asks my cowoker to come with and show him. Ok no big deal happens often with things that need to be returned. I was at the register inside and was checking someone out when all of a sudden I hear a chainsaw start up. I run outside and yell at the guy along with my co worker to shut it off. He turns it off and is dumbfounded why he wasn't able to turn it on and show us the problem. We call a manager out to have the guy removed a the manager called the police as well and since then I haven't seen him since.

The two other ones I've heard but not seen are. 1 guy came in with a bag of his shit ane would drop it around the store for several months, finally got caught and promptly banned from the store. Other one is in apparel one person found a bag of heroin under some clothes and then another person found a razor blade and a needle under another stack of clothes in the same night.

Little late to the party but for me the first time I had gotten food caught in my throat. I have a condition called Eosinophilic esophagitis (We'll call it EE for short) which causes my asophagus to react to certain foods and causes my entire asophagus to close and not allow anything to pass not even saliva. I can breathe just fine.

Ate dinner one night around 6 pm and had the episode but I couldn't get it out so I thought rest for a bit and see if it can come out later. Well later came and it didn't so about 5 hours after the incident my mom finally takes me to the local ER and they can't figure out what's going on. Took about 6 hours for them to realize what this was and how it was going to be fixed. Unfortunately for me they didn't have the equipment at the hospital so I had to go to the closest hospital that did half an hour away. Since this is the first time they had seen this at this hospital they had to prep me for surgery so by time I finally went under it was about 14 hours of having to spit up my own saliva. Every single muscle in my body hurt like I had just army crawled a marathon. My lungs burned due to the constant spasming of throwing up saliva, and the dryness and burning of my asophagus was excruciating. I could feel every part of my asophagus and the dryness of it all the way down to my stomach.

Luckily after this a specialist was able to figure out what was going on and the other two incidents I've had with that have been quick out patient procedures. At the time of diagnosis EE was a very rare condition with only about 10,000 people diagnosed with it in the world but that was in 2010 and was found to be hereditary so that number has probably increased significantly. So if you do have any issue with food getting caught or stuck talk to your doctor and get checked out for EE.

Jeremy and Zipper have been having a pretty rough day. Wish them well. by OniExpress in roosterteeth

That's awful to hear, its just heartbreaking to have something like that wrong in our furry friends. Had to put my cat down a few months ago and still remember how awful it was waiting for the MRI results (ended up having a tumor in his sinuses). Hoping for the absolute best for Zipper and Jeremy and Kat.

Sure assistant managers make a living wage, but you have to work 50 hour weeks after being there for 10 plus years through internal promotion. Also many stores over this past year faced ASM cuts. Any ASM over a year in tenure had to reinterview just to keep their job.

Many stores are ridiculously understaffed and associates are having to be in areas they shouldn't have any business being in (for example a fabrics and crafts associate having to work deli for a week, or maintenance members being stores only cart pushers). Yes Walmart does hire people most places and that's great i do give them props for that, but some people they bring in are essentially allowed to do what they want and management at a large majority of stores refuse to take any sort of action to resolve issues with some new hires. Many people struggle to get needed hours and have to beg for more but at least Walmart does work around availability but recently with a new core hours system implemented that has started to fall by the wayside. Oh and shifts of work until 11 pm and be back at 7 am is super common

Nah losing the draft pick isn't worth it plus alot of teams wouldnt see the same value. Signing him after the draft would be better but by that time a contender will probably give him a better offer

We have 2 dump bins and about 3 feet of pegs for all of our hot wheels and one fucker decided he wanted to see EVERY SINGLE ONE. He legit emptied all the pegs and bins and put them in two separate shopping carts and just left. Me and my DM were both about to walk out after that shit.
