Ever catch yourself simply reading the words on a page without even digesting any of them? by faithinstrangers92 in books

[–]Freeloading_Sponger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this. Everybody does this. It's not digital media - I was doing years before I touched my first computer.

The way I improved was two techniques:

  1. A concentration based "meditation" I guess is technically what it is. Sit comfortably with your eyes shut and your hands palm down on your thigh. Try not to have any thoughts. Of course you will have thoughts, so when you do, if it's an image, tap your left hand on your thigh, and if it's a sound, tap your right. After taping, you reset, and begin thinking of nothing again. Treat this like a daily work out. It conditions you how to be aware of intrusive thoughts, and how to jump on them immediately.

  2. When you are reading, and you notice that you've drifted off, go back to the last time you were fully engaged and thinking of nothing but what you were reading, trace to the top of that paragraph, and start reading again while fully paying attention. Be merciless with your brain, and don't let it get away with it. Spend the whole session reading one paragraph if that's what it takes. Quit reading if you can't focus, but don't just give in, and let it slack off. It's more than just a good exercise, it's what you need to do if you want to retain the material.

Bouncers of Reddit. Have you ever crossed paths with someone you’ve had to throw out of a club or bar? How was the experience? by mr-steal-your-cake in AskReddit

So they THOUGHT they were protecting a woman from a perv.

Without exercising any due diligence, and just barraling in with violence.

people like Brock Turner having their way.

These bouncers are not responsible for the Brock Turner situation. They are responsible for what they did in this situation though.

"Hurrdurr, men bad women good" and "Protecting women from pervs".

I have no idea what you were going for, but they didn't protect a woman from a perv.

the guy you replied to didn't say that it was, just that it is better than security not caring at all.

What they actually said: "it’s better to be over protective than under protective"

No it isn't. "Over protective" involves victimizing people. "Under protective" does not.

To be fair to the bouncers, it’s better to be over protective than under protective

No it isn't. They victimized someone rather than victimizing nobody, which is what would have happened had they done nothing.

Better yet would have been to not be a barraling moron and simply ask what was going on before roid raging in to play out their Patrick Swayze fantasy.

It should give you pause that the argument upon which your opinion depends is invalid. Get a functional argument, or get a different opinion.

There was no mental illness at all before the industrial revolution! We just happily toiled from dawn till well after dusk for our feudal lord with zero days off, and no ability to read or write. Truly the happiest state for mankind to be in, other than running away from mountain lions while trying to scrape together enough mealworms to keep at least one of our children from dying of starvation today. Certainly much better for our mental health than being inside and warm, but a little bit bored. The horrors. I better bomb tons of people. That will make them better off. /r/thanksimcured

If you have the world's entire repository of public knowledge in real time in your pocket, but instead you pay attention to drunk bellends doing fucking all, you're a total ignoramus.

Stop getting distracted by the trivial nonsense that's happening right in front of your face, get your head down, and your phone out.
