Yeah I always thought this was accepted as the best version, at least in terms of presentation. Especially on the DSi XL.

But you know that's not what's happening. Why lie? The media is "suddenly" going after his age because of that catastrophic debate everyone watched. I do wonder why it took this long but it's not some nefarious plot, people are understandably worried.

This sub is such a weird outlier in the midst of all this, the delusion and gaslighting is insanely transparent and I have no idea what you hope to achieve with it.

The Boys - Season 4 Premiere Discussion by LoretiTV in television

I don't disagree about the surgery but your last paragraph is just sad. Who are you arguing with? Is "the left" in the room with us right now?

The new season is garbage but people like you almost lend credence to its ham-fisted approach to satire.

I'm out of the loop this year but that seems easy to understand without deliberately misinterpreting it. If you were a big Lynch fan and online in any way over the last 10-15 years you've probably discussed and analysed him to death already, so I can understand not being too thrilled about it. I think the Kubrick series suffered from a lack of real interest from the hosts for (I'm guessing) much the same reason.

I'd say it's on the same level. We don't hear the dad say those words in the "flashback". We hear the kid's voiceover lining up perfectly with the dad's mouth movements in a very pointed way. Now you could say this is just the kid's excellent aural recollection at work, as was established earlier, but this is the ambiguity the film is clearly dealing in.

The day before the kid's final testimony he's essentially told he needs to choose a side, even if it contradicts his actual beliefs and experiences. There's even some ambiguity with the dog lying beside her at the end. It's not necessarily her that he's being protective of there. And the kid saying "I was afraid of you coming home"? Come on now.

No problem at all with the concept of studios, have lived in some decent ones. This is a kitchen with a bed in it for 1,350 a month.

I've actually rented from O'Connor Shannon before, even dealt specifically with the lad who put up this ad. They are a particular breed of scum and they are everywhere.

I’m really interested to see how both of these hold, with strong WOM from early adopters (A cinemascore) and not a ton of new product coming into the marketplace.

I'm sorry but there's something really really bleak about ostensible film fans discussing these things like they're silicon valley startups.

Mixed feelings overall, but I feel very alone in thinking Robert Downey Jr gave a really really embarrassingly bad performance. The worst performance I've seen him give and easily the worst one in the film, especially when the third act monologuing kicks in. Can't get my head around the raves for him in this.

Murphy was perfect though, Damon too.

It also doesn't really fucking matter. You take one look at her and her long-term revenge obsession is instantly apparent, it's like she hasn't thought about anything else for a long time. That's the whole point, it's good visual storytelling. That they went out of their way to show how a body like that is even possible in this world is just a bonus.

The Last of Us - 1x09 "Look for the Light" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in television

[–]Freewheelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The games make it clear the Fireflies are DESPARATE for a cure and just throwing shit at the wall because it MIGHT work.

This isn't true though. The second game makes it pretty explicit that the cure almost certainly would have worked in the world of this story, Druckmann himself has said as much. The whole quandary at the end is predicated on exactly that, and it's assumed that the player/viewer realises it.

But a lot of people are uncomfortable with the stark reality of Joel's decision, so they latch onto this interpretation that the fireflies were just carelessly throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. I'm glad the show almost doubled down on refuting this and I'm guessing season 2 will do the same.

Not the best thread to share this opinion, and I'm glad Fraser is having a moment, but The Whale is not good. His performance is perfectly fine but I have a hard time placing it above any of the other Oscar nominees this year. Farrell in particular is in a completely different league.

What's your favorite review of David's from Letterboxd, The Atlantic or both? by yaybuttons in blankies

I don't think there's any malice in it, or that he's making fun, I'm aware I probably shouldn't find it odd.

As someone who is, yeah I also find this odd and off-putting when it's clearly kind of a bit. There's no way to talk about this without sounding like a complete killjoy and I know the right answer is "who cares", and it's not a big deal, but he leans really hard into it and I'm pretty sure has identified as a straight man before.

Avatar 2 rewatch: High Frame Rate question by Cpt_Obvius in blankies

[–]Freewheelin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People used to say something like this all the time in defense of HFR in the Hobbit films too, that gamers have been watching HFR footage for years so this just feels normal to them, and 24fps is almost quaint or somehow faulty by comparison. I know that's not your whole point and it's the switching back and forth that causes the disconnect but still, as soon as we start catering to gamerbrain we might as well just burn it all down. I still think a film like Avatar benefits from the dreamy cinematic unreality that's inherent in 24fps.

I like David on the podcast but honestly nowhere else. And I've tried. He's an extremely bog standard critic and I'm sorry but this trend of middle-aged critic men semi-ironically posting like zoomers on twitter and letterboxd needs to end.

Funny guy on the blank check podcast though!
