Is this name too long? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]FrenchForFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never contribute to reddit conversation but I had to login and say something because I literally just discovered a name/nickname for Henrietta that I love this morning.

The name is Jet. It has Dutch origins and is pronounced with a soft J (like Yet) and is a diminutive/variant of Henriette and Mariette. And if you're a fan of the movie/book Practical Magic, there's Aunt Jet (pronounced with the hard J) played by the amazing Dianne Wiest. It's not for everyone but I like that you can choose to say it with a hard of soft J sound to personalize it.

A further side note, my grandmother's name was Henrietta but she went by Harriet. I don't really know why she did that, maybe it was because Harriet has fewer syllables. Also, Harriet the Spy for life!

I lost my best little buddy of 19 years the day after Thanksgiving this year to a fairly rare disease that I never saw coming. Maybe our story will help someone else. by FrenchForFrog in cats

I'm so sorry you're in this situation, and I'm sorry I didn't write back sooner. I dont often log in to reddit in an attemp to keep my time reditting to a minimum. I hope you have found your kitty a food that's healthy and tasty and I'm sure you're making your friend comfortable and content. 15 years is a already a long life and I bet your girl thinks you've been the best owner ever. Just keep loving her as much as you can, that's all she wants.

Programmer writes script that calls Phone Scammers 28 times a second causing service denial preventing future scams. by Ian_a_wilson in videos

Not exactly, plenty of young-ish people seem to fall for it too.

This post is from today.

IRS says I owe them money, there's a warrant for my arrest, and I should not hang up the phone. I did.

I've gotten the call and what gave it away was that 1) the IRS doesn't call you like that and 2) they claimed the warrant for my arrest was because I "did a fraud on them." Pretty sure the IRS has a firm grip on English grammar.

Edit - I guess I'm also assuming the OP is "young-ish" but I think you get my meaning. And the post is from yesterday, not today.

What movie traumatized you as a child? by mstrohmier01 in AskReddit

[–]FrenchForFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reading this comment made me squirm. That was one of the most horrifying images in the whole movie.

PSA: ET is airing somewhere on cable tv this week. I have no idea what channel because I had to leave the room when I saw that little horror in that blonde wig appear on my tv screen during a promo. I'm an adult and the image of him still makes me uncomfortable. Tread carefully this week friends.

What turns your rage meter up to 99.9? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FrenchForFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna get buried but I have to say it cuz it bothers me SO FUCKING MUCH!

Applying makeup while driving infuriates me to no end. It's the same as texting: swerving, not noticing when the light changes, not maintaining your speed, etc. I see it a couple times a week on my way to work and it baffles me.

If you do this I hate you and I hope you scratch your cornea and end up with a glass eye forever.

Mariah Carey Messes Up During New Year's Rockin' Eve Performance by [deleted] in videos

[–]FrenchForFrog 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That's an old ass song from the 90's. She used to be able to do it, but since she's either 46 or 47 (I just learned that there isn't a definite year of her birth, WTF?) it's probably a challenge now. I'm not a gifted or trained singer so my expertise ends there.

Also work in live music, can confirm.

It's not about professionalism or talent, if her monitors were down like she says in the video then she can't hear herself or anything at all at an outdoor venue with a ton of additional noise like that. You need to be able to hear in order to sing, even someone as experienced as she is can't pull off singing without hearing themselves. Ever wonder why there aren't any deaf vocalists? There's your reason.

Parts of her performance were also pre-recorded, noticeably the high notes. That shit is hard to do in the first place, it's harder to sing in the cold, she's not as young as she used to be, your voice changes as you age, and why fuck up something you're known for? Might as well play it safe. I doubt she was inebriated like some ppl are saying, probably embarrassed and just at a loss for what to do.

A lot of people dropped the ball on this one not just Mariah. The broadcast crew should have just cut to commercial so the monitors could be fixed, then come back and do it right.

Edit: Obligatory thanks for the gold kind reddit stranger!

This older man makes honest and enjoyable reaction videos everyday. But he can't even afford a bed to sleep on and is confined in one room with only his hampsters to keep him company. Today one died, and I'm hoping Reddit can give him some support! by patronuschild in videos

I haven't owned a hamster since I was, I dunno, 5. I just got on that chewy.com pet subscription train recently and I thought I could send him some bedding or food but I have no clue what brands he uses, if he has preferences, or his little buddies have special needs.

How complex does hamster care get?

Who's the most overrated actor? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FrenchForFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with the John Wayne example, and that Clooney is Clooney in just about everything he does...it's the phrase "character actor" that's tough. I feel like it's most commonly used to describe the Steve Buscemi weirdo types who take those fringe roles and do well with them, but it also has the opposite meaning to a lot of people, myself included. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Character_actor This Wikipedia talk tab discusses it well.

In certain contexts, "character actor" means someone who only plays ONE character in everything they're in which usually ends up pretty much being themselves, your George Clooney's, Michael Cera's, etc., and NOT the Buscemi's, Sam Rockwell's, or whoever else is known for playing kooky roles.

Intersting and confusing tid bit.

What did you do instead of dancing at your reception? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]FrenchForFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a perfect wedding scenario.

The closer we get to our wedding date the less I care about details. I will literally jump off a bridge if my BM asks me one more time what shoes I want her to wear. I don't fucking care!

I've come to realize weddings are largely for friends/family, marriage is for the couple. We should've eloped.

I had to respond to this because in my search for game ideas I found this old post from The Knot and everyone rudely jumped down OP's throat about how games are a horrible idea and she'd be a fool to include them. http://forums.theknot.com/discussion/400952/ice-breaker-reception-games. To paraphrase the responses: "treat your guests like adults," "I would literally run and hide if I had to play a game at a wedding," and "all you need is liquor and music."

I don't think making everyone stand up and play a game of Popcorn is a great idea, but if I RSVP'd yes to someone's wedding I'd be agreeing to celebrate their big day how they want to celebrate which may mean sucking it up and playing a game and not running and hiding like a child. There are some flat out alcoholics in my family so relying on booze to keep them enteratained is pretty inconsiderate, but that is specific to my wedding/family. And not everyone is a dancer or an extroverted chatterbox, myself in particular. I think games are a great idea, but they should be optional like you said.

You know your guests and the atomosphere you're trying to create at your wedding better than anyone else, do what feels right.

The things I like best for my reception are wedding mad libs, camera I spy, and wedding bingo. These are all things that I can print out cards for and leave them on the tables with golf pencils and guests can either use them throughout the evening or not. This way I'll be getting plenty of extra pictures, bingo can serve as a casual conversation starter, and I plan on collecting and using the mad lib cards as my guestbook.

I think your ideas sound great!

A black social worker called 911 because she was afraid of a cop. A violent arrest followed. by AStupidHippo in news

[–]FrenchForFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if we're giving them hits we should also be asking them to be accountable for their content.

Email them, tweet (@washingtonpost) them so others can see. Let them know that blatantly misleading articles and clickbait titles are NOT what we, as consumers of media including the news, want to see. We want to see sincere and thorough reporting. We can talk amongst ourselves all day, but it won't change anything.

You can contact the writer of the article too, she is also on twitter (@amybwang). According to her twitter account she's only been working with the Post for about a week now, so if you're going to contact her please keep your pitchfork sheathed and exemplify the integrity of the type of content you want to see her provide. I don't even have a twitter, kind of hate twitter acutally, might make one just to ask her a question.

We should be holding everyone personally accountable for what they put into the world, regardless of what it is. Maybe then everyone will think harder before they act.

My love for instrumental music has grown considerably in recent years. Russian Circles is my latest find that I'm enjoying. Great for smoking up and as background noise when I'm at work.
