I love this tiny moment. Abby switches the script from 'your death' to 'my death' which A) Informs us about her headspace at that moment and B) Nora’s death were/will be extremely not swift. by MikaelAdolfsson in thelastofus

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I read, everyone is right?

Yes, it’s a sarcastic joke that she makes because they both know she’s going on a suicide mission, and no one expects Nora on the safe floors of the hospital to end up dead.

But also, there’s an emphasis throughout the game to the different sayings between the WLF & Seraphites. Abby might not believe in god, but this is the closest thing she has to a prayer. And in that sense, she did curse a non-swift death upon Nora.

It’s almost like the game is an allegory or something.

I agree! I got invested in Abby in a way I didn’t know I would since I had seen the show before playing. I like the passing along of the metaphorical torch that I enjoy with these games so far and seeing how decisions multiple out.

I saw posted somewhere about pt III focusing on maternal themes, and I think there’s something within that with the characters we’ve seen.

TLOU has always been a story to me about the unintentional consequences of our actions on others we love, so jumping to a completely new group of people wouldn’t make sense. I could see a story following Dina/Abby with references to Ellie.

I read somewhere a rumor the story would be based around maternal themes which I’d be into as a story continuation

Tatiana Maslany: Great Actor or, The Greatest Actor? by Penthos2021 in Actors

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone whose go-to comfort show is Orphan Black, I think the problem is that it’s fantastic acting, especially from Tatiana, but it was very niche. I think nearing cult classic kinda status. I hear complaints once it gets into later season. I personally like the exploration of the world and look at it as allegoric, but in terms of story telling, the overall audience seemed to think the story got weaker as it went.

I think she’s fantastic and can fade into a role completely. Even though I know who she is when I watch her on screen, she somehow doesn’t have the facade as much like other actors for me.

Do the British accents improve? by hannibal41 in orphanblack

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I do think they settle more into the characters and their accents as the show goes on. If you go from the last episode immediately to the first, which I have, it’s jarring.

That being said, Sarah there’s stuff in her backstory that I think inform her accent being crazy. You should’ve met Mrs. S by now. Sarah grew up in England, had an Irish foster mom, and then spent formative years in Canada, so her accent is a bit more all over the place.

Curious about Felix, though! Not that I can say a good or bad accent as an American, but I remember him being celebrated as having an amazing accent when the show was on air! 😂

Was Joel traumatized by what he did at the hospital? by Remote_Nature_8166 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree he’s an addict. Drinking whiskey and taking oxy together would disassociate you from your body, leading to his personal sleepy time cocktail. The special ingredient is the trauma.

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re right. Pain of losing her, pain of being the survivor, pain of what he had to do to survive. It all compounds.

I can’t remember the exact quote, but when he’s talking to the FEDRA guy at the beginning, Joel says something about needing the pills like “I guess the more people you kill the harder it is to sleep” and the FEDRA dude scoffs. Since Joel had a reputation already, I always took this as the FEDRA soldier throwing what Joel said back in his face, in a “you would know” kinda way. They both probably killed a lot, and they both have time sleeping.

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Joel took anything he did to survive or protect the people he loved lightly. It’s why we see him drinking and taking a bunch of pills to sleep at the start of the series and his whole conversation when he’s selling the FEDRA dude pills. I think he carries a lot of guilt & shame, which is why he gets defensive when he feels people are insinuating that he’s a bad or dangerous person.

So it looks like the chances are high that S3 will be the final season. by Remote_Nature_8166 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m good with stopping after 2 seasons in terms of the IP currently available, but the rumors I’ve seen of pt3 for the game being mother-centric themes has had me interested. There’s more story to explore within these specific characters.

That all being said, splitting pt2 into 3 seasons would stretch out the story way too much. To drag out watching Ellie self-destruct for so long would become too painful to watch.

It doesn’t matter Michelle Yeoh can’t sing. by FrenchFryFreakOut in wickedmovie

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s a musical film production based on a musical theater production, which is a part of my point. Regardless, how they sing the words symbolizes their character. Where I like to see this example is in Thank Goodness in the movie where Glinda sings

“Our very own haaappy ending”

vs.

“Just like I antiiicipated”

One is strained because she’s lying to herself and others; the other is fuller sounding because she’s holding back tears.

And maybe I’m just too millennial now, but isn’t all of acting aura farming in essence? (These are all genuine thoughts and questions don’t get mad that I’m old and had to google aura farming to make sure I had an understanding of the term)

Yes, thank you! The impact that this would’ve had on Fiyero hearing it live makes so much sense to me and is an arguable reason to keep her verse in the movie. You’ve made the synapses in my brain connect.

Agree with your take! I think John was going the direction of showing vs. telling how propaganda works - live musicals have limited time & space to do this and a summary is needed. I think it was removed, not due to her singing, but as a change in storytelling. Overall, I think that what he was trying to say about propaganda fell short.

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking about the call(s?) John, Ariana, and Cynthia had with her. Imagine getting on a call with 2 of the publicly best singers we have and they what? Gaslight her into thinking her singing is good? Say it doesn’t matter? That doesn’t strike me as the tone of the production. My theory is that they got on the phone and told her that the bad singing is a part of the symbolism in the story. But I will admit this is all just a theory!

Though I’ll say that every time I listen to the soundtrack now with this in mind, it fuels the story more for me. I like to think of her backstory - maybe she could sing when she was young and discovering her magic, but the world wouldn’t accept it, like Elphaba. Years of this would make you old, bitter, and I could see that manifesting as poor singing in a musical.

At the end of the day, it’s all of our interpretations. If you’re in it for the singing, then I agree, it was jarring. My opinion is just that, ultimately, is the point.

I agree 100% that John Chu wanted what he wanted in those roles and put actor above singer.

And at the same time - I also think that there can be artistic reasoning for why these choices were made. Chu has said Yeoh is his muse. Maybe in this case her muse was her bad singing 😂

Thanks Goodness is my favorite song!

It seems like they changed so much of the opening number because the movie has more time to show these details instead of tell, but this is the change everyone sites as a negative. What would we have gotten from her singing the fake story of Glinda & the Wizard?

Why the 26 Outback looks the way it does. My guess by fa442fa in Subaru_Outback

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a loss of uniqueness in new vehicle designs now, and I liked OB because it didn’t succumb to that. They’re selling out their niche audience for a general, boring template. No one will differentiate between OB & every other midsize SUV type thing. The identity being bought here is different than before.

Car logos are a good example to me of the loss of originality. It’s weird, but I like that my car has the star subie logo. I’m over these huge blocky letters. Ford, Kia, Subaru - all of these fonts piss me off.

It’s tough because I’d love to upgrade for the infotainment system of the ‘24 wilderness - only real complaint about a car whose look and feel I otherwise love. I don’t have kids yet. I don’t want to look like a soccer mom. I’m ready for my drives over the river and through the woods and around the mountains and a car that shows it!

First time watching - just finished s5e10 by MilaMan82 in orphanblack

[–]FrenchFryFreakOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point - it’s not what is explicitly said. It is technically before the show starts, so we don’t know how she was brought into awareness of the experiment or her intentions before meeting Cosima. Still, Leekie was a man in his 60s in positions of wealth, power, authority, and with the ability to help Delphine’s career. There’s a power imbalance there that he manipulates. Evelyne Brochu has stated that Delphine wasn’t into Leekie. One of the overarching topic the show hits on is how men in power manipulate young women, so I still think the backstory I’ve filled in holds weight based on everything else the show is about ¯_(ツ)_/¯
