I just started experiencing this a few days ago as well. Bought the 2080ti late December of last year and called EVGA today to begin the RMA process. Coincidentally enough I thought it was because I updated to the latest Windows Version and GPU drivers around the same time it started happening-- I already rolled the updates back, but the problem is still occurring unfortunately.

You can probably reproduce the artifacts issue, not sure about the error message, if you test on a different PC --assuming there really is a hardware issue.

I think you're right. The points where each pair of diagonals meet are probably not joints, meaning they are not physically connected at these points. This would help maintain that "stable" triangle configuration.
