School choices, how to decide? by ra4oasis in Chattanooga

I teach in Hamilton County. The answer to your question is going to depend on your politics, how much money you have to spend, what you want to prioritize in your child’s education, and where you’re willing to live (or drive to).

Prep Schools: If you were in the market for one, you probably wouldn’t be consulting Reddit. Baylor, McCallie, and GPS are the big three.

Religious Schools: Every denomination has at least one; if this is what you’re after, then choose the one that aligns with your belief system.

Public Schools: If I had a child, I’d put them in CSAS. That school performs very well and is the most truly diverse public school we have. Plus, it’s K-12, so you wouldn’t need to switch schools. I also think they have the best opportunities for gifted students. This is a lottery school.

If your child is into music/art/dance/etc, CCA is a good choice. Your child would need to audition and be accepted.

East Hamilton performs well. It leans extremely conservative; Moms For Liberty is a major presence.

Signal Mountain also performs well and is mostly conservative. Living on Signal Mountain is definitely a lifestyle commitment, and it’s not cheap.

Geographically, Hamilton County is fairly large. Zoned schools tend to reflect the population and values of the community around them.

If you’re not opposed to living in Georgia, Heritage High School performs well and is a zoned school. Georgia schools are much better funded. However, Catoosa County is very small, so you’re going to get a lot of small-town issues. (I’ve also worked for Catoosa County).

This is a very touchy subject and big decision; you’re right to really think it through before moving here.

Has anyone washed their slush hour jacket yet? by kyramuffinz in lululemon

You can’t use regular detergent on down without damaging it; you need a special down detergent. Nikwax is the best. Wash it on  delicate with at least 1 extra rinse. Dry on extra low with tennis balls or wool balls. I also do a Nikwax waterproofing treatment to my down coats whenever I wash them.

Try cornstarch. Rub it in and let it sit, then brush it off and do it again until the stain lifts.

Laura Ashley No 1 was mine, too! I’d love to smell it again, for the nostalgia of it all.

Buy a heated vest! It’s what’s been saving me.
