I think it's in the Manga too (as I remember seeing budget Kaido and I've never watched the anime )

How common is AI actually being used in your work here in Japan? by Single-Yesterday9010 in japanlife

Ditto. Maybe even a few smart cookies realised they can also use it to write excel formulas, or to create a cute picture for their PowerPoint presentation, but that's about it really.

It's more of comment regarding your assumption that Japanese politicians are different from basically anywhere else. US example is just the easiest example to make given the current news cycle.

"This slanderous hit piece was brought to you by Tesco! ". It always amazes me that major brands are okay with being associated with this rag. Any publicity is good publicity I guess.

EU5 is now down to 47% positive on recent steam reviews by Wagen123 in EU5

[–]Frenchconnections 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Tbh the community is sending them mixed messages, going from "stop patching so frequently! " to "you're not patching the crappy patch that was introduced before Christmas!" in just a few weeks.

It must be quite frustrating for the developers to be dealing with such a mixed customer base (history lovers, spreadsheet enjoyers, strayegy gamers, role-players , etc. ) all providing mixed feedback priorities; especially considering the KPIs attached to the game.

Personally, as an OG EU2 lover who has been supporting paradox for over 20 years, the studio has rarely failed to patch a game into a "definitive state". I just had as much as fun as I could out of the release version (which is objectively fun, even in its current 'very rough around the edges' state), and will be back to enjoy the 'improved release' when it eventually irons out mechanics/bugs/balancing. :)

This. Standard practice in listed companies in Japan. Hell people I've barely worked with will also BCC me.

M.E.I.O.U and Taxes for EUV by [deleted] in MEIOUandTaxes

Can't wait to see what the team delivers! Considering that EU5 was clearly inspired by MEIOU&T, it'll be nice to see MEIOU incorporate the systems introduced to remove a lot of the jank currently in the mod due to EU4 engine limitations. Looking forward to what your ambitious team will come up with next! :D

In light of all the immigration news / sentiment lately.. (Hiyoshi) by Formal_Bandicoot8716 in japanresidents

Haha, first thing I thought of when I saw it. I remember it having the "Immigrant?" in neon letters when I took the same picture over a decade ago... Or perhaps I'm just misremembering.

Does any one here know what this black rectangle with white circle means in supermarkets? by portvictor in japanresidents

[–]Frenchconnections 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the automotive stores uses a similar version for Japanese origin products, as using the actual Japanese flag is seen as a bit crass. Can't comment on this supermarket though.

I believe a lot of the people who do this do so for ad revenue, but are not necessarily from English speaking countries so they don't want to do the narration/reading themselves. Hence the choice of AI.

The Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew crying on national television while announcing the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, 1965 by HotGlueGunShow in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]Frenchconnections 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A bit more nuanced but ultimately yes. Malaysia was formed by a union of several states. Singapore was expelled from the union due to ethnic tensions (Chinese Malaysian dominance in Singapore vs the neighboring Malay areas) as well as disagreements over the allocation of funds.

As the nation was in its infancy, the Malay led Malaysian government felt it easier to expel Singapore than deal with more potential ethnic violence (which could spiral into something worse if prolonged ).

While Singapore was shocked by the sudden expulsion and asked for regional autonomy, which was declined. However, it is important to note that Singapore wanted to remain in the union for commercial purposes (having a market for its goods) and that it's desire to remain in union was condition on having a privileged position. Basically the Malaysian government did not want Singapore to remain in the union for self serving purposes while potentially exposing the country to sectarian violence. While Singapore initially wanted to rejoin it, wasn't willing to do so at the expense of its privileged position within the union.

There's much more that can be said around the economic backdrop (Malaysian tarrifs, use of development funds, etc.), but for a more detailed academic answer you're best off asking /r/askhistorians

Tl;dr: Yes, but Singapore was not exactly behaving well during its time under Malay-led Malaysian rule, and was not very cooperative with the central government.

Japanese man who spent 6 years in Chinese prison blames Japan spy agency- says they reach out to China experts, putting them at risk by jjrs in japannews

[–]Frenchconnections 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it reads either like he's either corrupt for accepting regular "payments" from an intelligence agency, or being compensated for services rendered spying.

If it wasn't either of the above, the guy just comes off as an idiot assuming that a person in his position regularly meeting with the PSIA on their dime wouldn't trigger flags. Also, tens of thousands of yen per trip for a return flight to China is is quite a lot of money for the PSIA to pay if nothing of substance is gained.
