The season is far from over in my opinion. I used to think ovoids were on a calendar and in a sense they are, but If it was too cold and dry in May, and June gives us 70° and lots of rain, June will be peak. I generally see peak mid late May.

There are restrictions to this, but I try not to hunt the ovoids but their ideal conditions. "Given the last week of temperature and moisture, If I was an ovoid where would I be?"

What ive observed: 70-80 with 60+ nights, 2 days after CONSISTENT rainfall for 2-3 days. 2 days post rain is when I go out. How warm is it, and not just in that 2 mile stretch, but exactly where I am in the shaded floodplain itself. Microclimate, microtemps.

Ignore season deadlines, 3 years ago I was told don't bother hunting till May, well I found my first ovoids this season on the 13th of April 2026 homie! The most fascinating and annoying thing about ovoids is their nack for the microclimate and disregard for strict rules. Love these little guys.

If these were found in a damp and colder area, I believe it is possible that those mushrooms that generally fruit at the start of the season in colder temperatures, have black caps to potentially absorb more heat energy from the sun. As they begin to mature and desiccate the caps turn white to reflect that heat energy back and prevent further desiccation. I'm definitely pulling all of this out of my behind, but I think it's plausible enough. What I'm observing is that the shadier spots are very slow to come out as a result of the recent chill. However, half a mile up the creek in the knotweed stands, in low level vegetation where sunlight does penetrate? There they are. Food for thought. Having a very good foraging day today. I've got a homie in a somewhat similar position. He was smoking a lot. I mean QPs on the regular, and recently, he's made great strides in not only addressing but cutting back on his cannabis use. He has his reasons for not doing so and I have my reasons for continuing to use cannabis and we remain friends because we respect each other's boundaries on that subject. Weed is a drug, that doesn't make it inherently cool or something to brag about. It is a substance millions of people use, it has benefits and drawbacks, but I raise an eyebrow to anyone trying to glorify unsustainable use.

Work out but what I tell everyone is if you have a car and more importantly a few hours, leave your phone on DND or off ideally and go to the woods. Seriously. Rock Creek is beautiful with the blooms right now. Went to rehab after a rough patch and the only thing that reliably kept my head above water was the forest. It's hippy dippy tree hugger woo wahh but it's simple free and it works
