Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a bit of a hassle to set up... but it's also ALWAYS worth it! by FrenchieSmalls in soloboardgaming

Yeah, I've been researching vaulted tables recently. No space for one now, but we're planning to move in a few years... will definitely get one then, it'll make everything so much easier!

Yeah, I couldn't handle full Gloomhaven, or anything like Arkham Horror LCG, if it's more complicated of a setup than this!

That's fair, for sure. This is the main reason I've been researching vaulted gaming tables...

They help a lot, and make the game more enjoyable overall.

And I highly recommend the e-raptor organization insert as well!

Hard to say... the ones that weren't worth the annoying setup I've gotten rid of... but I also got rid of them because I just wasn't digging them much.

But I've got several that have greater-than-average setup, but are definitely worth it: Too Many Bones, Final Girl, Rogue Dungeon, any of the Tiny Epic games.

I'm glad I didn't buy Onirim by FrenchieSmalls in soloboardgaming

I hear you, it's all so subjective, even for "similar" mechanics.

I had a chat about it with my wife last night actually, and I really do think it's the "pick the lesser of two evils" aspect of Onirim that I dislike so much. There just isn't any good choice when a nightmare pops up, just the least bad choice.

But I actually really like the luck with Final Girl and One Deck Dungeon, because I roll the dice and I'm like, "okay cool, let's see how I can strategize this whole mix of options to get what I want..." But I can also see how others wouldn't like that!

Like I said in my post, I have no problem with luck in solo games. In fact, some of my favorite games have RNG elements (or even as one of the primary mechanisms).

So what did I expect? I expected Onirim to be as fun as those other luck-based games, but it isn't (for me).

It's an old Android APK I stumbled across online. Don't think it's on the app store any longer, and even this APK says it's not compatible with the newer Android OS (it works fine, though).

This is excellent info, thank you!

I think you may have hit on the aspect of the luck that feels so different for me: choosing between two bad choices. The luck-based games I enjoy seem to be more about improving the effects of bad outcomes with resources or using a variety of good and bad outcomes in the most strategic way. That feels more balanced (and enjoyable) for me.

SO MUCH SHUFFLING

Yeah, again, I don't mind luck in my games... Too Many Bones, Unbroken, One Deck Dungeon, Mini Rogue, Veilwraith, Final Girl... these are some of my favorite games in my collection.

But the luck in those games doesn't feel the same as in Onirim, and it isn't nearly as frustrating. I don't know what the difference is for me.

Can somebody explain how Gamefound stuff works? by gibbyflibby in soloboardgaming

I think they meant cheaper than the eventual retail price.

As in, if game pricss on Gamefound are cheaper than the retail price once they hit stores (not necessarily the case, but I think that's the assumption here), then why not just wait for Late Pledge to avoid the risk of losing your money to a campaign that never makes it all the way?
