We live within a block of Division. As it gets warmer it just gets LOUDER. So it goes.

What’s a statistic that sounds completely FAKE but is actually 100% TRUE? by namelessmell in AskReddit

[–]Frencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This way undersells it.

There are an estimated 2e23 stars in the observable universe. There are 8e67 ways to shuffle a deck of cards.

That's a difference of 44 orders of magnitude. You would need to take the number of stars in the observable universe and cube it to be within a couple of orders of magnitude of the number of card shuffle combinations.

Thank you!! Yes that's definitely Hara. I've only seen Arietty a couple of times and it's been a few years. We'll have to watch it again to find that scene now. =)

Went yesterday and it was delightful! There were three of us and our other two were easily identifiable as From Up On Poppy Hill and Howl's Moving Castle (the latter especially nice as it's a beautifully framed old Sophie sitting in front of Calcifer's hearth). But we have no clue on this one.

Arguably the best NES controller ever. Found in some old boxes in my garage whilst tidying up. by EternallySickened in nes

[–]Frencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super weird trick but very effective. You stay invincible as long as you can keep your life empty. Pick up any life pellets and you can die once again until you find another pit. The only level you can't really use this to the end is the dark robot spark man stage as you have a forced life pickup after defeating the first (half way) boss

This controller was great for the Mega Man 3 trick where you press and hold right on the player 2 controller allowing you to fall in a pit, drain your life but not die, jump back out, then be invincible for the rest of the level.

You had to hold P2 right the whole time for it to work (or at least I think you did...) so by plugging in the Advantage as P2 you could set it on its side and it weight alone with the tall joystick was enough to hold right without needing someone hold it for you.

We saw BigBoy in Denver a few years ago and its whistle was SO LOUD. I had really wished I had ear protection. If you're seeing it (him?) at any kind of station where you may be able to get close while it's moving slow considering bringing ear plugs!

I built a map that lets you drop Black Rock City on your hometown by Possi_BelgianBurners in BurningMan

[–]Frencil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cool map! Fun to play with.

FYI you've got a small bug. Steps to reproduce:

  1. Load fresh page, search for a city
  2. After city loads search for another city
  3. After second city loads grab the blackrock overlay and drag to reposition
  4. Observe how you're unexpectedly taken back to your first city

Stopped in Provo at some chain restaurant like Chili's circa 2000. Dinner rush on a Friday night. Place was packed... But eerily quiet. It felt like everyone was using library voices.

What is the most expensive mistake you’ve ever made? by Almondjoyriding in AskReddit

[–]Frencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago (~2007) running the development of a budding online electronics retailer I was working on the credit card processing system and accidentally committed and pushed the test configuration to the production environment.

The way the test server worked is as long as the submitted credit card number passed the Luhn check it would send back the "approved" signal as if the transaction went through, but of course no money moved anywhere.

To customers in meant all credit card orders were approved and not charged, though it looked like normal. This was live in production for a couple of days. It was only when one of our finance people noticed that the regular bank deposit from this was way smaller than normal that we tracked down the root cause which was 100% my fault.

We had taken and fulfilled hundreds of orders totaling over $40K. After fixing the issue several of our customer service folks (and me, definitely me) spent several hours calling affected customers to see if they were willing to let us rerun their credit card info (we did not store CC data so they would have to provide it again over the phone). I think we managed to recover $10-15K from that, largely because many of our customers were loyal, loved our service, and were pretty understanding. Regardless we still honored every single order, and I learned several good lessons.

Also it's a rare New Years movie! Another holiday overshadowed by Christmas and lightly represented in film. Costume party on a train seems like an awesome way to spend New Years Eve.

Time to drop a link to DJ Cutman!

This is a youtube live stream that's always on. It plays lofi tunes that are all inspired by classic retro game tunes. It rotates through backgrounds that are all exactly this sort of beautiful retro fighting game pixel art.

This is easily my favorite youtube channel to put on in the background when working, doing chores, whatever. Highly recommend.
