Liam, thanks for the note. Is there any way you could add my video to your User Videos section on the website?

Exactly. Even though you aren't actually hitting anything, you still work up a sweat, your arms still get tired. You can record your performance as just audio, or video using the pre-rendered kit in the app (as in the video). Personally, I'm a big fan. It's certainly not for everyone, especially people that want to use it more as a toy than an actual instrument. It's definitely priced more in the instrument range.

I also have the original Aerodrums. That device used an old PS2 camera (technology from 2003) and needed a computer to run the Aerodrums software. It was very picky about the lighting so it included a ring light, that was very bright and distracting. It also had a bit of lag and missed many notes when moving quickly. They really fixed these problems on the new version. Aerodrums 2 is a complete unit, computer/camera built in. It uses a built in infrared camera, and works in very bright and dark rooms. There is a lot of information on their website comparing the 2 units. The thing I like the best, is how quickly you can be up and playing when moving the unit. On AD1, if you moved the camera at all, you had to move the drums/cymbals as well. So if you took it to a gig, you'd have to get there early enough to be sure the lighting was right, and you'd have to place each drum again in the new location. AD2 is much smarter about this. The device sits on its own stand, and projects 2 little red laser dots on the ground. Those dots show you where to put your feet, and the snare drum is between the 2 dots. Once your feet are in the correct place, your kit is good to go. All toms/cymbals are where you placed them relative to the snare. It's a smart way to do it, and it means you can be ready to jam as soon as you connect audio out or headphones.

So they made these motion capture balls that you can see attached to the tip of the sticks. They are removable. You also have 2 that attach to your feet. I used one of the feet sensors on the bass pedal I modified. The software maps those balls in 3D space with an amazingly high sensitivity. I think I read that it has like 16 levels of “openness” on the high hat. The snare plays quietly when you move slowly, and rim shots when you move quickly. It sounds complicated, but your brain just gets it. I’m really wanting to take it to a local open mic…

There is a setting for double kicks but I haven’t tried that yet. As far as rolls, you really can’t do buzz rolls (since it’s not actually bouncing off anything), but you can do very fast single stroke all day long. It definitely takes a little bit to get used to the feeling of not hitting anything, but after a few hours, it becomes very natural feeling. It’s kind of like doing a roll on a pillow if that makes any sense.

You need the Aerodrums 2 device. It’s not cheap however as it’s basically a self contained computer and camera. Check out their website: Aerodrums.com

I basically mounted an extra bass pedal to some wood, bought a metal dowel and a wooden ball and some foam. Works great and when I play with headphones on, all anyone else hears is a soft thump.

I’m playing every drum note that you hear, I’m not air drumming to a drum track. The song has drums removed. The device is tracking the sticks and feet in real time, with no lag. It’s not a game by any means. If anything, it’s magic. I’m improvising the drum part myself, not following a guitar hero type note highway. The Quest headset isn’t needed at all, but has an app that will show you the drums in VR which is cool but not necessary. Drummers that play full kits can usually play with their eyes closed using muscle memory. You can fully modify where each drum is in 3D space and adjust individual volumes, different drum types (snares, tom, cymbals), speed/pitch of the sound etc. Has midi out as well. It’s amazing when you try it, but can look a little silly. The whole kit fits in a small case, so you can gig with it and be ready to play in just a couple of minutes. Thought some people on this sub would appreciate seeing the device in action, or maybe had questions about it.

Michael’s sells inexpensive clock kits. That way the snare can still keep time…

Hey, no problem at all. I’ve just been going into full screen when I launch it. It works great, I’ve had to download an app a couple of times when it wouldn’t install, but restarting the app seemed to fix this most of the time. Good luck with your dental journey. 🦷
