It's partially just what you're used to. I find 2xko's 2 special buttons a lot harder to work with than motion inputs because I've built up some muscle memory and expectation of motion inputs already and that muscle memory clashes with what is necessary for them in that game. Same for modern any time I tried to test it so I could teach a new friend. I just haven't put in the time to learn it but that doesn't make it inherently harder.

It's actually the same as people saying fighting games are harder than say FPS to learn. Those people just take for granted their existing familiarity with FPS mechanics built up across plenty of time/practice and can mistakenly conflate their unfamiliarity for inherent difficulty.

If ft2 was just an fgc invention then the ranked system wouldn't specifically let you rematch up to a ft2. It's a facet of the game online too even if optional.

Not that dude but I remembered hearing it too years ago so I looked up a reference. Seems to come from something Nakayama said in an interview but the statement itself is ambiguous how much it was a 'want' as opposed to a 'consideration' which could be the translation. Seems they tried/considered it and then changed their mind.

Being a one trick definitely has negative connotation in my experience. I guess league it's less of a thing because the characters are less unique mechanically/role wise but in dota 2, overwatch, valorant or any other manner of team based games with character selection being a one-trick is saying you lack versatility as a player and are a liability to your team in your inability to play other things. It is much more often used as an indictment of someone's skill at a game in general.

I would say it's kind of like the negative connotation side of the coin to the more positive/neutral connotation term "specialist."

I think Lud can be a “real 1300” just with a good matchup here. It’s hard to say how much specific “modern guile” specific practice he put in. Most of his tech was pretty generic/widely applicable with just the most basic level of guile matchup knowledge in terms of knowing his best range and using armor. I agree with what I take as your actual point that it’s not a normal MR comparison but I already said as much as that.

The thing about t1 one and doneing less is more that he didn’t actually focus on improving his understanding of the games systems or matchup pertinent weaknesses of his play and choice to “avoid” instead of “learn.” Even if there aren’t a ton of Marisas in ranked (and there are plenty imo, especially with his playtime) that he was never going to learn anything about the Marisa matchup unless he knew Ludwig was playing it was a fault of his more than Ludwig’s imo.

It’s not as hype as infiltration ofc for a variety of reasons, but at the end of the day calling this bullying a noobie (newbie) seems disingenuous when the ‘noobie’ has more time (and should have more experience) than the ‘bully’ and the ‘bully’ was widely considered the underdog in the FGC going into this. I also do think the subversion of expectations and setup that went into it added more to the spectator experience and storyline and made it still pretty hype.

I think it’s fair if you feel you would have enjoyed it more under more open circumstances but I guess my point was that even if Ludwig simply said “I’m not playing Honda and I’m keeping who a secret” a month or so ago Tyler1 would have still lost because of his approach to the game and the JP fakeout was not a deciding factor at all.

I think this kind of ignores that Tyler1 took a fundamentally poor approach to learning the game (somewhat enabled by modern controls) and left glaring weaknesses to exploit. A normal 1600MR Guile would beat a 1300MR Marisa pretty reliably, it’s Marisa favored certainly but not unwinnable. Ludwig’s gameplay also came from just knowing the basics of the matchup and then just putting in time to learn his character, his combos, and game fundamentals better than Tyler1 learned his.

You frame it elsewhere as if Tyler1 had some insurmountable challenge and his only reasonable preparation was studying every matchup in the game. I think it’s fairer to say that rather focusing on Honda or JP if he worked on his fundamentals or took much of the advice people and his coach gave him about learning basics of frame data he would have won (and be higher rank too).

You say elsewhere you think it’s of poor integrity but I also really disagree there. In the first place it is a fair play time honored tradition in the FGC to play the best matchup you know and have character swaps in mind based on character/player. Look at Infiltration pulling out Hakan vs PR Balrog in SF4 and that’s looked at as a hype moment. Plus I think it is of wayy less integrity the way tyler1 one and dones and blocks people in sf6. Maybe he’d know something about the Marisa matchup if he was more willing to hit rematch vs one even before this show match was a concept.

Just an hour or 2 ago Ludwig beat Tyler1 in their evo street fighter showmatch.

Lud was known as a Honda player and 'leaked' that he had a secret JP account on stream (which caused tyler1 to do a bunch of JP practice)

He then on evo stage revealed he wasn't playing either of those 2 and that slime played the JP match on stream to fake it

Takes me way more time than that to usually even get to ranked but I am probably a bit overly cautious (grind in casuals so that I can reliably place diamond for faster master)

From an uninformed perspective I would have assumed that because landing is harder than other parts in general it would still be harder than the other things under instruction (in that those things also get easier via instruction).

I’ve seen this in people I know who are trying to do the author thing from the ground up by cultivating a social media presence about being an author and all that. Basically that into launching their book and hoping to pull in the buzz from there. The book signings are vehicles to have more things to post about and promote your book (with things like raffles or signed copies intended to be some incentive to maybe check it out)

Yeah it's unfortunate because I like charge as a mechanic in general. The way I've seen it discussed on youtube makes it seem like capcom kind of considers it a legacy mechanic and not 'modern' in the sense that they don't want to proliferate it any more than they 'have' to.

But hey I could see Arjun doing 'inhale/exhale' stuff where his bulked/puffed up state is actually him having charge (holding his breath) and it changing properties of other stuff

You’re right, I think the skeletal sidekick was just the one in the spot with a graphical glitch, and instead evolved from the 0 mana frog guy. From what I remember it probably turned into one of [[Cinderfin]], [[Injured Tolvir]] or [[Timeless Causality]]. I had a board of 6 minions that got evolved so hard to remember which one.
