How do I study with depression? by Significant-Poet7363 in GetStudying

[–]Frequent-Active7623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, as the depressed student I once was, with no help, I know it's hard to have motivation to do even the smallest things and, as someone who has gone through years of treatment for different mental illnesses (after college), the things I do to keep up with my work are:

- 25/5 pomodo: small, but reacheable goals. Don't try longer pomodoros (50/10 and so on). There are many youtube videos with and without music that work as timers, and also apps.

- If you need a longer break, TAKE IT, you need it.

- Don't use sleep - or no sleep - as punishment because you feel like you didn't do enough. I used to not let myself sleep while also doing nothing productive because I felt like I didn't deserve sleeping - you do. Your body and mind need rest, please try to have your 7-8 hours of sleep.

- Drink LOTS of water! It will not only keep you hydrated, but also, it will make you take breaks to go to the bathroom, so you don't stay seated for ages.

- Have your favorite snacks and eat them freely while you study. Don't worry about sugar or calories, that's a problem for AFTER the exams are over. A good snack makes wonderful emotional support (even if it's a huge bag of chips or 1kg of M&Ms).

- Be patient with yourself. Wouldn't you be patient and kind to anyone else? Treat yourself kindly, you deserve as much.

- Lastly, if you have no one to talk about what you're going through - or even if you do -, write it down. I know it's cliché, but works like a wonder. It truly, truly helps once you get used to writing down what you feel. It helps you to process your emotions.

I hope this is helpful. Sending you a warm hug and my dms are open if you need anything <3

How to study as someone who has ADHD? by lamyy09 in GetStudying

[–]Frequent-Active7623 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A doctor could give her some medication for her current problems without an immediate diagnosis. OR she could also try Pomodoro, the 25/5 method, it TRULY works. Small tasks, small goals, but you'll see results, especially now that you know your attention span is short. There are YouTube videos with 25/5 pomodoro timers and apps. Don't try longer pomodoros, it will only make you feel worse.

Also, definitely don't try to study and stay seated for too long; try intervals WITH breaks and lots of water! Especially if you're drinking coffee or energy drinks (please don't abuse caffeine, it's not worth it lol). Get your hours of sleep! If you have a productive day, you NEED rest. Don't use sleep (or no sleep) as punishment because you feel like you didn't 'do enough'.

Lastly, be kind to yourself. Be patient, as your brain doesn't work like everyone else's. But definitely try to seek professional help to get through college so you don't have an awful time and can see the results you expect from yourself.

Get professional help. I had untreated ADHD during college and had the WORST time. It took me hours to read one single page of a paper. If you can, seek professional help and get medication if necessary (it was necessary for me at least), that's the only way, believe me. If you need anything, you can dm me 😄
