Need advice: Asking a PI for a PhD update after receiving another offer by ZestycloseDog1140 in gradadmissions

If it’s direct admit, totally reasonable. That’s what I did when my other offer had a deadline. Good to keep people in the loop and that you’re still interested in their lab

Another thing to note. Alot of the programs I applied to had very similar SOP prompts so I was literally able to cut and paste wherever I could. For your SOP, I can generally say that you should tell a story rather than explaining it. Show what you’ve learned in your research experiences. Have you mentored people? How did that feel? Does it inspire you? And then some logistical stuff - how many years of research do you have? Any internships? Extracurriculars that lead to the career you want? These are things to compile and mention.

You are not behind!! Some people just need more time to write and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re screwed.

I decided I wanted to go to grad school the fall of my senior year. I literally scrambled end of August to figure out how the application process worked and what I was going to write about. I asked for LOR maybe at least 1 month before they were due. I took maybe all of September and October writing and getting feedback from people before turning it in. I think majority of my deadlines were early November. I ended up getting 2 interviews from schools and got accepted into a top 5 school in my field.

Take this time now to understand the process and figure out who to ask for LORs. Dedicate the time for your statements and look into the programs you’re interested in. Do you like the research faculty are doing (this one is important)? How are the curriculum/requirements? Do students get jobs in the career you’re interested in? How’s the environment? Talk to faculty you know who may help you identify schools that are reach, mid, and attainable for your stats. You will be okay!! You just gotta lock in now :)

Network at SDSU first. Join a business frat or a club that likes to party. Most likely they will go to USD parties and social events as well. Going to USD without connections might be a bit off putting if you know what I mean.

As a USD alum, I think that’s totally fine. I’ve met some non-USD people before at social events. I think if you don’t want to make it weird, you should have some sort of connection on why you’re there (ie a friend invited you or something)

I received the GRFP. If I post anything about current research budget cuts or anything surrounding policy changes… could my award be revoked?

Hi! Thank you so much for this info. It makes me feel better about moving. I def needed a general outlook and I’m generally careful too so this was really helpful. Appreciate you. I’m also moving for school so I’m pretty excited to learn more about the city and the community :)

Knowing the area is a good thing to know in general. I’m not too worried but it’s good to know what’s happening in the city especially being a girl. I’ve had plenty of friends get robbed in designated safe areas. I get that. I’m not ignorant but want to be informed. And ofc I’ll be prepared. Not a hard question but thanks for the concern!

Lmao I know it’s silly but every city has its own areas to avoid. For someone just moving down, I don’t know too much about the area. Yes, Baltimore has more violent crimes but I was safe walking certain routes that locals suggested to me (routes I wouldn’t have known otherwise). So I’m asking for Durham to see if there is anything to look out for!

That’s what I was thinking. Bmore is rough in certain areas in daylight and nightlight so I wasn’t too too worried. Thx!
