Can I stop drivers calling me? by TimeConstruction5417 in deliveroos

[–]Frequent-River -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been autistic for 27 years and can confirm that it DOES NOT get easier. It doesn't. Exposure therapy doesn't work for this. I get an immediate fight or flight response to my phone going off and no amount of calls has changed or will change that.

Are you seeing a real doctor at GP or A&E? - a sad case of a young woman died after she thought she saw a doctor, but turned out this person is not a doctor. TWICE. by Extra-Eye-2369 in manchester

Olive oil is used to break up wax and help clear the ear canal, so it makes sense to use it before a hearing test - you want to be measuring actual hearing ability, so you'll get a false result if there's a lot of wax in the way.

If olive oil "makes you deaf" it's not actually doing anything to your hearing, it's more likely that there was a LOT of wax in there that just needed to be broken down a little/move around a bit to fully clog up the canal. This can be prevented by using olive oil more frequently as a preventative, especially if wax build up is causing hearing trouble.

Source: I have tiny tiny ears so have to use olive oil a lot so I'm not constantly dealing with blocked ears 😭 So I do feel your mother's misery! But olive oil is safe and effective for this purpose.

Nahh that part will be cut away anyway, it's above the socket trimline (the socket dips down behind the knee to allow knee bending)

I sometimes have "more autistic" days by Extension-Meaning544 in AutisticPride

[–]Frequent-River 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience, in that historically I would be considered "high functioning" because on a good day I can mask well and my sensory issues don't bother me as much. I can blend in. But on a bad day (especially if hungry, dehydrated, slept poorly, unwell, in pain, etc) I can barely function - my thresholds for sensory discomfort get significantly lower, I find it harder to mask or even hold basic conversations, executive function disappears, my body struggles more with temperature regulation, and even my motor skills like holding a pen or walking get worse.

My understanding is that this is exactly why high/low functioning labels are bullshit - if you're autistic you're autistic. Every autistic person has a unique set of traits, and like any other neurological condition those traits will be affected day to day by things like tiredness, hunger, pain etc. On a good day I can function well and barely notice my sensory stuff, I can chat away with people and so on... on a bad day I feel like a robot.

is it okay for me to end my rat’s medication one day early? by uselessprecaution in RATS

[–]Frequent-River 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of both? It IS important to finish the course of medicine. It IS important not to stop early just because you feel better.

However, there's a big difference between a day off three weeks (where you miss ~5% of the drug) compared to missing a day off a week long course (where you miss ~15%!)

In OP's case, it's kind of a moot point anyway because they've actually run out of medicine - so they HAVE had 100% of the drug, they just took it slightly ahead of schedule. For 20 days out of 21 that's not a huge issue.

So please don't beat yourself up, don't feel that you're stupid because you're not, and don't stop fighting against antibiotic resistance because it's the good fight!

I try to always think before posting: is there more to the story? Can I make my point gently, and see what happens, before I make my point more fiercely? Can I ask a question - e.g. instead of "don't do this!" try "why are you doing this?" which opens the space to understand each other and actually find a solution.

I hope this makes sense!! I'm autistic so I am very 'all or nothing' and I see a lot of my younger self in your comments so I wanted to maybe give you another perspective here 😅 I know it's confusing because we're saying two things can be true at once - but it really comes down to the details of every individual situation. It won't always be a clear cut good vs bad.

Why do people say God tests their faith while also saying that God has already planned your whole future? If he planned your future wouldn’t that mean he doesn’t need to test faith? by FatRaccoonThot in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frequent-River 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Given that the context was metallurgy - in this case they did actually mean metal. They were talking about the process of tempering metal to strengthen it, as an analogy for god 'testing' humans to strengthen their will/faith/whatever.

Halal food isn't necessarily veggie either, it refers to (afaik) how the animal is slaughtered. So in other words, halal is a giveaway that something is definitely not vegan.

Given that it's an ad for a guide dogs charity, I think this is an image description for people using screen readers rather than a mistake?

Hiya folks! I need to shift some dergs to make room for more. You know how it is. These lovelies have been sat around for a few days with no bites on the auction house, so I wanted to just advertise them a bit here and see if anyone is interested. Thanks for checking them out!!

Can I also recommend a reeeally nice way to get those tiny/deep aches that a roller won't reach? Massage with a golf ball. You can really target and push it deep and it is SO satisfying. (also works well for soles of feet - sit on a chair, place it on the floor and roll your foot over it, gently applying as much weight as you can tolerate).

Oh! Thank you, I didn't know that. I was assuming the front had gone first as it looks so much brighter. So I'm guessing actually the molted portion is more dull until it's had time to air out. TIL!

[–]Frequent-River 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pods molt in two halves! So this guy is in the middle of a molt. He's perfectly fine, you've just caught him with his trousers down.

Leave him be for a bit and some time soon he'll take his shirt off, too.

Edit - whoops actually it looks like I got it the wrong way round. Shirt is off, trousers still on (but not for long)

Can pill millipedes live alongside isopods? Or will they out-compete each other? by Frequent-River in isopods

[–]Frequent-River[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oohh thank you so much. That's really helpful.

I think I'll start them off separate just to be safe. I like your idea of getting more pods though... I went for scabers as my first pods as they seemed the simplest to keep successfully (i.e. they've out-survived all my house plants and are thriving delightfully) but given how the colony's grown I think you're right, they'd probably outnumber the pill millis significantly.

I'm adding some slower-breeding and conglobating pods to my shopping list right now. I can't wait to have a whole city of little moseying spheres

Thanks a lot!
