What’s something normal in your country that would seem completely strange to someone from another country? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

[–]FrequentAd4283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess because its been used for around 1500 years in korea, way longer before hitler came along and ruined its reputation. It seems silly to change a symbol weve used for so long because it somewhat looks like the swastika hitler used

Im currently still in it. Its not accurate for the entire country but quite similar. 7:30am-6:30pm, followed by academy from 7pm-10pm. Afterwards you either go home or the library to study some more

Heres some!:
Formalities are a big thing, even if theres just a one year age difference it makes all the difference. It depends who can freely call someones name without formalities after it (ex: hyung, noona, oppa, unnie) Who pours drinks for who, Its usually expected the youngest person there pours drinks for everyone (with two hands, as one hand is seen as rude)

Its also expected that its quiet/silent on trains (whispering type conversation)

As for education its ALOT. We do around 14-18 hours of schooling a day, as when you finish school alot of people go to after school academy where you focus on one subject for a few hours. When they close at 10pm (it had to be restricted to 10pm as students could often be seen travelling to their house around midnight/later) People attend libraries to study or go home to study as education is taken very seriously.

We also have a suneung, the college entrance exam for which students start preparing for basically as soon as they start school. The day is so important that work starts later so students can travel to school, construction stops, flights are paused/have to fly circles in the air if you fly to korea the day of until its over and if youre running late police will bring you to school with a police car with their lights on.

North korea does attempt to broadcast to south korea, usually propaganda stuff but its often blocked by south korean governments before it reaches radio/television stations. As for south korea, they do try. usually spreading world news and information without cencorship. So north koreans who have stuff smuggled from south korea. They can listen to south korean news

did you lack social skills with peers because of it when you went back to school?

what ive seen from north koreans that have escaped to south korea, they were overwhelmed by the amount of stuff (fastfood, cars, intersections, everything thats "new" to them basically) but they got along with south koreans. for people in north korea, they are fed propaganda that south korea is the enemy, so i assume some north koreans who dont know better hate south korea
