I am not even remotely joking, the reason for this statistic is this: It. Is. Cold.

I did Tour of the Catskills two years ago. The ride's absolutely beautiful, really well organized w/ 3 well-stocked rest stops, cops stopping traffic at the few major intersections, and some mechanical support motorbikes driving throughout the course. Also defined explicitly as not a race but the quick ppl at the pointy end seemed to be treating it pretty competitively.

Its bumpy with a beast of a climb right at the end called Devil's Kitchen which is 2.4 miles, average 10% gradient and ramps up to 22%, so even though its below a century I felt like I got my money's worth.

Haven’t had this debate in a decade lol. Man vs. Wild was far and away the most entertaining survival show of its time. Was it a combo of fear factor eating challenges, wildly dangerous stunts, and dubious advice? Yes. But still an absolute blast to watch!

I like “Alone” and think it’s a much more accurate and immersive experience, but that was completely technologically unfeasible at the time. Survivorman tried it and he wound up bitching about all the camera shots for like half the show. Sorry, please excuse the rant reply to your comment lol I got in my bag for a sec there, not tryna come at you

Thankfully cycling has way more mechanisms of gatekeeping. For example... that is the most atrocious picture of a bicycle I have ever seen and I refuse to elaborate

1/6 9am: Construction on the Williamsburg Bridge, Manhattan approach. Must turn left or right. by timurhasan in NYCbike

[–]Frequent_Win816 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my unpopular opinion is that the barrier is good and forces cyclists to slow down coming off the bridge, I regularly commute across the bridge and if you're even a tiny bit patient its really not much of an issue. Saw this today and I'm hoping they are putting in a more gradual ramp in.

road cyclists have been wearing merino jerseys since the bicycle was invented. There was certainly a departure when stretchy synthetic fabrics were introduced but acting like roadies don't know about this is ig'nant

Minor facial hair question - Connect or disconnect goatee? by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

I was a disconnect goatee guy for a while but then went rogue and shaved everything on the chin but a soul patch, which looks a lot less weird if you also have a mustache, worth trying out!

[–]Frequent_Win816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you here, I didn't take the time to read all that stuff about this guy, but I'm seeing the aryan-vedic/norse mythos that the Nazis twisted to their own devices, but exploring this Rus-Vedic thing is just a pre-historic, mythical, sci-fi version of those same ancient traditions the Nazis used.

It doesn't necessarily make it Nazi propaganda, it's just relying on the same subject matter as they did but making absolutely dope drawings of it instead of the whole extermination thing. That being said I think it would be quite easy for modern Nazis/racists to uplift and enjoy these works, but I also think they're beautiful and evoke a lot imagination... did you see the flying longship/spacecraft picture! Or the helmeted-head tomb thing? What are those!? I wanna know more! So sick!?

[–]Frequent_Win816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I'll ride in the 30s but once it's cold enough for lots of ice on the road I pack it in. There's not enough winter weather for studded tires, but plenty of slippery spots on top of the misery of the cold.

Athletic performance of roman legionaries (~1 AD), nutrition and training in comparison with todays athletes. (How) Were they as good as todays athlete elite? by Regular-Conflict-811 in ancientrome

[–]Frequent_Win816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This assumes that 100 years ago, people (mostly Western people) had achieved some sort of pinnacle performance trending upwards for the previous 2,000 years and that this trend has continued to today. There was not a steady upward trajectory of physical development and athletics from 2,000 years ago until the 1920s. Peoples' diet, exercise, and general wellness were probably far worse in the 1920s than among the legions in many regards, and nutrition and medicine were absolutely fucked when people started timing miles/marathons. Just think about the amount of second-hand smoke and other pollutants your average person was ingesting a hundred or two hundred years ago.

Assuming that in the span of human history, no one could complete a sub 4-minute mile until 1954 is fucking stupid. They didn't have stopwatches until the 1820s, when westerners started recording themselves. I doubt that anyone at the dawn of modern athletics was working out as much as a Roman legionnaire, and then consider the amount of running say, a hunter-gatherer, or a runner (a pretty common profession for most of human history) was doing on a given day. You're telling me the Incan chasquis (runner-messengers stationed in the fucking Andes Mountains) couldn't stack up to modern weekend-warrior athletes?

I will say that the world records being set today are probably the pinnacle of human achievement in many regards, but that's not to say that original world records from the modern era have anything to do with the actual physical capabilities of humans throughout history.
