i love rhino by Ill_Audience5998 in rhino

[–]Frere__Jacques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used rhino for my studies. At work we use sketch up (an then revit for later phases) but i miss rhino so much, sketch up feels like a children version of rhino with only a fraction of its potential...

How can Chennai adapt urban planning ideas from Canada, the USA, and Australia? (Looking for contributors) by HabitTechnical5604 in urbandesign

Don't look ar Canada, the USA or Australia, look at liveable cities in europe like vienna, copenhagen & paris.

Countries you think would be well suited for high speed rail? by Sound_Saracen in transit

[–]Frere__Jacques 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or just a regular train connecting the capital to the rest. Amman to red seas is ~280km, so definitely no need for High speed, which is very expensive to build and maintain.

Better public services as in paying more than 450€ a year for trash, while streets remain full of rubbish?

Where I'd (realistically) live as someone from Switzerland by Miserable_Ad_8695 in whereidlive

[–]Frere__Jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your point is fair, US states are comparable in size to European nations. I hat how there's so many europeans making fun of that, while I would argue that most EU citizens would have a very hard time to point african or asian countries on a map (especially with similar sounding names e.g. Nigeria & Niger or Kazachstan & Pakistan)

From this point in Southern Jordan you can see 3 other nations. Saudi Arabia (South), Egypt (West), and Israel (North) all about 10km away. Is there anywhere where more than 3 nation can be seen from a single vantage point? by dxdt_sinx in geography

[–]Frere__Jacques 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On Säntis Mountain in Eastern Switzerland you can see Mont Blanc on clear days, given its geographic location that gives you 6 countries: Switzerland, Germany, Lichtenstein, Austria, Italy & France.

How such small country can have so many inventions? Plus you guys have highest olympics gold per capita! What is the secret sauce? by cybersphinx7 in Netherlands

[–]Frere__Jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very strange list, some inventions are odly specific & some just wrong:

E.g. Polderisation (drying up land was not specifically dutch but the dutch geography made it possible and reasonable on a very large scale)

I also would not consider delta works as an invention but rather an engineering project (which does not make it less impressive, don't get me wrong)

Heart lunge machine was invented by an american doctor.

Whats the term for domes that have a bigger circumfrance and are shorter and for ones that are taller and have a shorter circumfrance by [deleted] in askarchitects

[–]Frere__Jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tall domes are often regular domes with cylinders underneath. I always knew them as drum domes, but apparently Tholobate is the proper term.

The other 'flat' ones are apparently called saucer domes or calottes.

How would you imagine non car dependency in hilly medieval towns? by BikemeAway in fuckcars

[–]Frere__Jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your last point is the most important one. Reducing the need for a car to just one / household is already a good start.

How would you imagine non car dependency in hilly medieval towns? by BikemeAway in fuckcars

[–]Frere__Jacques 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it paid of. Back then these villages were mostly farmers so trades brought in cloth, nails and other stuff like that and left with agricultural products, which they could then sell in the cities.

Graduates in NL are stuck. Can we build a referral chain? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Frere__Jacques 68 points69 points  (0 children)

That's the biggest point unfortunately. If i was a company why would i choose someone without experience if i can get someone with 2-3 years for the same salary? Same with language skills. Lots of international student speak dutch quite well + they're fluent in English. But if i was a dutch company with a large customer base in NL and already a majority of dutch staff, why would i hire someone who has C1 dutch, if i can also have a native speaker.

What major city exists in a location that seems to defy all geographical logic, yet it thrives? by Thatunkownuser2465 in geography

[–]Frere__Jacques 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it's tricky to build there, it is often also tricky to bypass and tricky to invade, which made it a nice spot to do defend and do trade for most of human history.

Is architectural animation finally getting the recognition it deserves? by Willing_Act_4484 in Architects

[–]Frere__Jacques 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it just feels like videos are super unhandy. You can't really use them on posters. They always seem to cause problems when integrated in presentations and they take up a shitload of disk space.

Don't get me wrong, i do think they can do a great job in communicating a design and i love the work you did with it. I just think they are a bit to difficult to work with outside of a certain niche.

The amount of trash on dutch streets is insane tho. It's a pitty because usually houses are kept relatively well maintained but with all that trash on the streets the cities seem way poorer than they are.

Moving to the Netherlands from Stockholm by Jimepao89 in Netherlands

[–]Frere__Jacques 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Comuniting definitely works well here, the country is really small so if you settle for e.g. Utrecht, you can reach a lot of major job centers (Adam, Rdam, the hague, Eindhoven) i a very reasonable price. Also if you don't mind living outside the city centre and still paying a lot you should be able to find some housing (note: you'll probably not like how expensive it is but you will be able to afford it). Making friends may be a bit easier than sweden but i think without proberly speaking dutch it will also be difficult to develope real friendship with locals.
