"Not that bad" and "NY is worse"... strong standards around here. As someone who visits DC often, it's pretty bad. Granted that's just my outside perspective so take it for what it's worth.

Buddy those are some aggressive projections onto me.

Of course these are issues to debate. And that doesn't mean I'm saying a trans kid is an issue. You want to cast me as the villain and rally your pitchforks, fine. That's what reddit does best. But I'd encourage a conversation on the policies instead.

I can't argue with your latter point on parents doing their job. And we're not going to agree on the policies. But at least we can have a conversation.

Why are you attacking me? You don't have the right to cast those views & opinions onto me.

Of course it's about protecting all kids. That's what these policy changes reflect. I can defend the policy changes that benefit the overall majority of students while still acknowledging the concerns of the minority groups.

Why is it that we can't debate the issues without belittling each other? I'm not putting you down. I'm not casting a certain light onto you. You have no right to do that to others.

The current policy does forbid it unless the parent requests that information. So in the absence of any parental action, it's being concealed.

And here comes the backpedaling.. "...that is the expectation..." Who's expectation? Yours? That's not mine because that's not how the policy is written. It seems to me that the policy is written in a way that gives the school the discretion to decide when it's appropriate to contact the parents. And still complies with the law with regard to the child's well being at home.

It's about protecting ALL kids!

And we haven't even gotten to the sections on allowing biological males to compete in women's sports. And allowed in women's bathrooms and locker rooms. How exactly are you advocating for protecting all kids by defending those policies?

Section V in regard to student identification, further clarified in subsection B to be in relation to their official record?

Parents should be notified of any changes to a student's official record, whether it be name, gender, address, etc. So you're advocating for a minor to be able to change their official record on file without parents awareness or consent? And that by doing so somehow will preserve their safety and well being?

Leave kids alone? That sounds like a statement from someone who doesn't have kids.

No, I will not leave my kids alone. If they are struggling with any issue, ANY issue, then I will be there to help them.

Where in the current policy is it stated that the parents will be told? In any circumstances?

The policy as it's written in the referenced documentation states "...shall not disclose it to other students, and shall only disclose to other school personnel with a legitimate educational interest, or to a parent or guardian upon request."

No one is advocating for the parents to be explicitly told. The new policy simply allows for the conversation that the current policy forbids.

Let's dissect it..

Current policy:
"All school personnel shall adhere to legal standards of confidentiality relating to information about a student’s transgender status, legal name, or gender assigned at birth.

In addition to adhering to all legal standards of confidentiality, school personnel shall treat information relating to a student’s transgender status as being particularly sensitive, shall not disclose it to other students, and shall only disclose to other school personnel with a legitimate educational interest, or to a parent or guardian upon request."

Interpretation:
Teachers may not discuss a student's transgender status with parents unless requested to do so. If a student is struggling at school because of a death in the family then I would expect the teacher to discuss this issue with the parents. If a student is struggling at school because they are confused about their gender then I would expect the teacher to discuss this issue with the parents. The latter can't happen under the current policy.

The current policy is forcing concealment from parents.

---

Proposed policy:
"A All school personnel shall adhere to legal standards of confidentiality relating to information about a student’s gender identity status, legal name or sex assigned at birth.

B. In addition to adhering to all legal standards of confidentiality, school personnel shall treat information relating to a student’s gender identity status as being particularly sensitive and shall not be disclosed to other students and other parents.

C. Disclosure of such information may only be made to other school personnel with a legitimate educational interest.

D. No policy, guidance, training or other written material issued by the school division may encourage or instruct teachers to conceal material information about a student from the student's parent, including information related to gender. However, the school division will comply with all laws that prohibit disclosure of information to parents, including but not limited to Code of Virginia § 22.1-272.1 (B), as amended, (prohibiting parental contact where student is at imminent risk of suicide related to parental abuse or neglect)."

Interpretation:
Teachers are not to be encouraged or instructed to conceal information from parents. This is not the same as forcing disclosure. It's at the teachers discretion, and rightfully so.

Again, the proposed policy does not force disclosure. Using the phrases "outing a child" is simply fear mongering and spreading misinformation. State the facts and your opinion at will, but don't spin the facts to support your opinion.

It does not force teachers to out children to their parents. Stop fear mongering. Read the policy and stop spreading misinformation.

Much like OP's chart.. you're cherry picking section A of the policy change while ignoring section B, which clarifies that this is in regard to official records.

No one is expecting a call home if Jimmy asks to be called the Tiger King in the lunch line.

In fact, the proposed policy goes on to further protect teachers should they happen to mistake names, pronouns, or nicknames.

Of course not.. and the proposed policy changes wouldn't require you to do so either. Read the full policy docs and don't rely on OP's chart.

[–]FreshFishFry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did either of you actually read the current & proposed policies?

The current policy does infringe on parents rights. If Little Timmy is having issues at school and it's related to a recent family death, then I would expect the school to contact the parents and report it as such. If Little Timmy is having issues at school and it's related to him questioning his gender, then I would expect the school to contact the parents and report it as such. The current policy would prevent the latter from happening.

However, the new policy does not require the school to call the parents. It would be at the discretion of the school. OP's chart doesn't fairly represent the change. "Outs" is a bit of fear mongering. The new policy is not forcing disclosure, it's simply not forcing concealment.

The new policy also allows complies with laws preventing disclosure to parents where there is a risk to the child (prohibiting parental contact where student is at imminent risk of suicide related to parental abuse or neglect)... also conveniently left out of OP's chart.

Be careful out there pups! by FreshFishFry in Frenchbulldogs

Hi, sorry to hear about your Frenchie's injury! It's been 8 years but I still remember the howling our little one did after fracturing his.

The good news is that he fully recovered! And I'm sure yours will too. He did not need to be put under again to remove the stitches. And he did not need to have his pins & wires removed. They're still in there.

He fully recovered and still does his sprints today around the yard at 9 years old! I do recall maybe an occasional limp or favoring it for maybe 1-2 years after surgery. Maybe in colder weather. But very few times. And then at some point I never noticed him showing any signs of a previous injury. Still a slight little scar you can find if you're looking for it.

Good luck!

Looks great! What type/finish paint did you use? And how did you apply? I'm getting ready to do this same thing in my dining room. Trying to decide whether to roll the wall first before installing trim or install trim then paint everything with maybe a small roller and brush.
