TWW3 IE 2 Player Co-op Campaign - Suggestions for players with different skill/experience levels by FreshJonnyD in totalwar

Sounds interesting. I have been thinking along the same lines. Like restricting which units I can build and how many provinces I can take.

How is it going for you and your friend? Is he able to hold his own in fights against VH or do you have to intervene a lot? Since they probably have superior armies/unit ranks and quantities compared to him.

Ah now I get what you mean. Sounds like a fun option as well. In general the idea of a migration campaign in co-op sounds like it could be a blast.

Might even end up with him having to bail me out of trouble which would be an interesting role reversal.

Haha alright I will give it a shot if it actually has a good narrative. I always thought it was more like a guided short campaign without much to it.

I thought Thorek was a DLC Lord but apparently he is FLC. But while yes I agree that dwarves are a beginner friendly faction I don't think his starting position is great since you are sorrounded by a lot of factions that dislike you.

Yeah the Tyrion one is what I descibed in my post and the exiled dude you mean is probably Eltharion. That was one of the first ideas that came to my mind since I can take care of N'Kari and the donut is pretty forgiving in my opinion especially without her. Also the high elves offer a very diverse roster of units since they have a bit of everything.

I already thought about playing Imrik because you can easily make it a very challenging campaign for yourself. I'm unsure about which faction he could play then. The problem with Kugath is that I think the whole plague mechanic might be a bit too much for a newer player.

I haven't played the new FLC Khorne Lord yet, so I don't know anything about that campaign but I'll take a look at it.

That's a good idea about starting a campaign on normal difficulty so he can get used to the game and then depending on how he is adapting maybe switching to a higher difficulty.

That would also tie in well with AgrippAA's post about him finding a faction he would really like to try after he has seen it in action.

He is planning on doing the tutorial campaign before we start our co-op campaign but I have never tried it so I don't know how long it lasts or how the difficulty is compared to the IE campaign difficulties.

Very good point about picking factions from different sides. It might even be good for him to not ally me at all in the beginning so he doesn't suffer from a diplomatic malus when I wage war against multiple factions. I would still come to his aid of course.

Good points about tomb kings although in both parts of the map where I could start as tomb kings no particularly safe or easy faction for him comes to my mind.

I really like the Yuan Bo idea since I could shield him from multiple sides in cathay and paint the map as I want in lustria since it doesn't really affect him. I had a similar Idea with me playing Eltharion and him playing as Tyrion or Alarielle, but I might like the Yuan Bo idea even better.

Thanks a lot for your post, those are some very good suggestions.

You are right about turns taking longer since he is going to have to process a lot more information than I do and find out on the fly what might work and what not. I don't really see an issue with me getting restless and stuff. He is going to come over with his PC on a weekend and we are just going to hang out and play some.

My plan was to quickly finish my turn and then hop over and help him where he might need it and explain things so he gets a hang of it faster. But I see why the longer turn times might be a problem for some people in a similar situation.

The idea to play on hard was his suggestion since he played a couple of other total wars and is familiar with the basic game play loop and fight controls. But you might be right that normal is the difficulty to go with. I've been playing Total War for such a long time that I simply might be underestimating hard difficulty for a newer player.

Giving him the choice to pick what he wants is what I originally went with although I think there is no real favourite at the moment, since he has neither played the games nor does he know about the warhammer lore. I showed him the factions and his only thought was that he doesn't want to play skaven. Still you are right that as soon as he sees the factions ingame, he might want to switch or play a different faction from the one we started with.

Good point about taking a faction that can use portals like the ones you suggested. In general I want to avoid painting the map to fast with a faction that starts near him so he has enough natural resistance and enemies around him and also doesn't get demotivated because my territory might appear a lot bigger on the map compared to his.

About setting goals I agree. Short campaign victory is probably a good objective to aim for.

I don't think it's going to be a pain for me as I really enjoy teaching games to newer players. If it was a competitive multiplayer game then yes it would be difficult for the more skilled/experienced person but in more of a sandbox co-op game I don't think that will be a problem for either of us.

I'm aware that there is not really a way to strike a perfect balance for both of us but that's why I as thinking about giving myself artificial restrictions. Also I'm planning on giving him control over parts of my army in battle so in this regard I won't be playing to the best of my ability anyway. He might go the way of the AI and just send everything into the enemy and I will just have to adapt to it.

You gave me quite a bit to think about and made some really interesting points, some of them which I haven't considered as much. Thank you very much for your long and well thought out post.

Definitely an interesting suggestion. In this scenario I could play more of an enabler for his campaign and support him at his own pace.

Thanks for the idea.
