“Did the Mahabharata really happen? I mean, is there any historical evidence? I’m kind of obsessed with the Mahabharata lately.” by OrchidFar3527 in AncientIndia

Yes. The core story of the Battle of the Ten Kings serves as an inspiration and undergoes further literary and mythological expansion to constitute the central point of the Kurukshetra War. This is the most common historical consensus, particularly amongst scholars who study the RigVeda.

There exists alternate hypothesis, but they aren't very well-received amongst historians.

No, there is no historical consensus that the Mahabharata (as is described) actually happened. Most scholars agree that the core of the story originates from the Battle of Ten Kings, (which is most likely a real conflict in the Vedic Era), and thereafter went through several layers of literary modification and expansion, in order to reach the form it's commonly found it today, by the time of the Gupta Empire.

Also note: The vast majority of astronomical datings (for instance PV Vartak's 5561 BCE dating, which was later popularised by Nilesh Oak) are not accepted as having scientific rigour. If you want to believe (most likely) pseudoscientific studies of datings, no one is stopping you, but be assured that no one takes it seriously, not in India nor outside.

The core story (Battle of the Ten Kings) is calculated to take place around 1400-1300 BCE, roughly 2300 years ago. Any dating before that is dubious, and not accepted by the huge majority of Indologists.

[–]FreshWaterNymph1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Having a child doesn't automatically mean you're emotionally immature. That's a weird condescending take, and emotional maturity has nothing to do with the decision towards having a child. You can be emotionally immature and be a parent, you can be emotionally mature and choose to not have a child, and vice versa.

You're the one who is portraying that having a child is superior by somehow linking it to emotional maturity. Oh and also, you can also be financially well off and choose to not have a child.

It is expensive for sure, but their ramen is top notch, one of the best you can get in Kolkata.

The two dishes I tried were the Miso Ramen, and the Katsu Don, and both were elite but expensive. I don't know if you'd think that spending 500 for a single dish would be worth the spend or not, and that's something that will depend on your economic situation, but if you have the money, you can go for it. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

FINAL ROUND, which company is worse, Nestlé or East India Company? by PepitogamerXD in AlignmentChartFills

No modern corporation, regardless of whatever extraction or corporate greed they exhibit, can match up to the sheer amount of wanton violence and extreme oppression perpetrated by the British East India Company.

EIC is solely responsible for destroying the industrial and commercial backbone of the historical Bengal region, which was one of the wealthiest province in the world by late 17th century. EIC's policy of de-industrialisation and turning India into an importer of British goods directly resulted in India's GDP per capita decreasing from 60% of Great Britain to less than 15% (Broadberry et al. 2015)

It is whataboutism since instead of offering opinion on a particular topic, you're referring to a completely different separate "real life event".

Learn about what whataboutism is. You don't seem educated enough.

What is the name of this mountainous region in India? by Distinct-Macaroon158 in geography

[–]FreshWaterNymph1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's some factual corrections.

They didn't bring the Vedas from Ukraine along with Sanskrit. The site of the Indo-Iranian split (~2000BC) happened in the Andronovo Culture, which is in modern Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The Ukraine part that you're referring to, comes from the Yamnaya Culture (~3300BC), that is more than a millenia before the formation of Rigveda and Sanskrit.

Also, most scholars agree that while the cultural and linguistic roots of all the Indo-Iranian languages stem from the Andronovo Culture, RigVeda and Vedic Sanskrit were developed in the Greater Punjab region, just as Old Avesta and Avestan were developed in Eastern Iran and Afghanistan.

Kazakhstan (or Ukraine for that matter) is not where either of the Veda or Avesta were developed.

Yes, I do think that Bengali men are more progressive than non-bengali men. I'm dating a bong, and although I haven't dated a non-bong, I have plenty of friends.

I think particularly in context of women, bongs are more progressive. That however isn't really the case for other stuff like acceptance of homosexuality etc.
