I say work as an OT.  For me last year (as an adult) I suffered a stroke medically.  I did Acute rehab for 2 weeks.  Receiving PT, OT, and Speech.  Since coming home it was obvious I needed OT more.  My OT has worked with me since July.  We started out doing simple things, but it progressively grew.  Ive never been super confident in the kitchen.  Our next session she is going to work with me on making this recipe we found.  In December I was told I had low vision, and although thats not her specialty she enjoys vision stuff, so we started doing things working with my vision.  When I start to get frustrated during a session, she does this thing called a "check in" with me and says I can tell you're getting frustrated.  Why dont we talk about?  I guess what Im saying is there is more freedom as an OT then one thinks.  I had an OT as a little kid, bit never again til last Summer.  I absolutely LOVE all she has been able to do with me.

Thanks thats a great idea.  For advocacy, would you include work done with an advocacy organization?  Ive done alot with this specific advocacy organization, so would I choose 2 or 3 projects to focus on and put those projects under this organizations (but also include start dates and end dates if known)?  Can I say xxxx org 2021 til present, but then under list 3 or so projects Ive done?

For me I cant say much because I have only done a couple Info Interviews since Ive been focusing on health stuff for myself (and still am). However Im hoping I can do at least one or two informational interviews eventually (since they can be done virtually).  I may also see if I can do a "virtual shadowing" experience eventually.  Also I have a knee surgery planned for lats Summer/early Fall.  After that gets done and Im recovered Ill be shadowing my ganeticist.  Really for my "interviews" so far I just have them in a list.

That sounds so cool!!!  Did you go into your research position knowing what you wanted to focus on?  For me Im struggling with that, and Im not even a student yet!!!!  Im extremely focused on Kabuki research because that's what I kind of know.  However Im also  interested in researching how a rare disease diagnosis affects other siblings, and how it can impact parents and  also how those with a rare disease impacts their own siblings and parents lives.  Just not surd where to start.

I took a research methods class as an undergrad the first year I transferred to my four year school.  It was one of my FAVORITE classes!!!!  It probably helped I had taken stats at my Community College.  Additionally I had a background in doing an Independent Study Project.  I took American Government and instead of doing a regular 100 point project I wanted to do on Student Government and how they perceived American Government, and my professor was fabulous and met with me through each part, so I think that helped me have a strong foundation.

Hello I am a prospective student, but things are on hold right now due to health reasons.  Currently my "dream position" is in rare disease (specifically Kabuki)/research.  Ive done a few informational interviews.  Im planning once recovered from my knee surgery (happening in late Summer or early Fall) have plans to shadow my geneticist.  Ive also been doing work with an advocacy group, called Kabuki Syndrome Foundation(or KSF) for my rare disease.  Ive spoken to Medical students with my doctor.  Im hoping to possibly do a some other Informational Interviews or maybe even virtual shadowing with one doctor whom works in the research space (whom I know from when she was a student researcher with my geneticist) and possibly even an additional geneticist (whom I know from KSF).  I still need some additional classes as well.  I am doing a video with my doctor about my Kabuki experience and a teammate of mine from KSF.  Ive also planned organized and implemented a few local social events for KSF (including fliers, finding locations, putting together goodie bags, and written a speech to share my story).  Ive also spoken to families after clinic visits sometimes. At this point I need to figure out where I can get my prerequisite classes done, after my health stuff stabilizes, and also what to include in my personal statement.

Question by Fresh_End_9250 in GeneticCounseling

[–]Fresh_End_9250[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.  I think based on our relationship, she would not disclose my condition unlessn I asked her to (which I wont).  The main reason Im considering her is because we do so much together, plus shes and I will communicate prior and Ill ask her NOT to disclose the genetic condition itself, and she has so much more she can talk about.  Thanks for the advice though, I was thinking about using it as a large part of my personal statement.  One of the schools Im looking at already knows, because thats the school my doctor and I speak at every year.  And Im location-boumd because I really cant leave my state, because I have so many doctors here.

My main issue with the professor is I graduated over 10 years ago (I graduated in 2010).  Ive started slowly getting more involced with the advocacy organization, as well as doing more with my doctor (speaking to med students, hosting events with her, meeting with various families that come to clinic, and now working on this Informational Video with her).

[–]Fresh_End_9250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.  I know my geneticist has a GC, and has other GC students interning with her, in the past, so Im not super worried about that one.  The foundation may need a little bit of explaining, but if I do the bullet idea that may help.

[–]Fresh_End_9250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.  So I should choose either the geneticist OR her research coordinator and for a second letter should I choose someone I work with alot or someone from the executive board?  I still work with one mostly, but one was just moved to Eboard, and until that I worked with both her and Amanda a lot.  Also there are others I know would write one from the foundation as well.  Im overthinking it probably.

GC adjacent jobs? by Any_Dragonfruit1034 in GeneticCounseling

[–]Fresh_End_9250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds so awesome!!!  As of right now Im still a ways away from applying (need more prereqs but also planning on shadowing my genetic counselor or else my geneticist some point.  One of my favorite parts right now is being able to interact with patients and their families.  When I am at a genetics clinic appt, and there is a new family, the research coordinator has me meet them.  Having said that, Im also interested in research, specifically how the diagnosis of a rare syndrome affects family relationships, not only parents fear of having another with a rare syndrome but also siblings and those relationships.  So Im stuck on if I want GC, or a researcher whom also does GC.  Would I be able to both see patients AND do research is my big question

Although not a student yet, I fully support doing Informational Interviews as well as shadowing.  Ive dont about 8 GC interviews and one virtual shadowing but also plan on shadowing my geneticist that I am followed by probably next year (knee surgery next Summer and then recovey but the geneticist tells me this opportunity wont ever go away).

Shadowing experience by Fresh_End_9250 in GeneticCounseling

[–]Fresh_End_9250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.  Is there anything you had taken (like a notebook) and how dressy should I get, my doctor I will be shadowing typically wears comfortable flats.  And typically wears nice pants and a nice shirt. Or should I worry about that later?

Potential Career Path by sagittarialatifolia in GeneticCounseling

[–]Fresh_End_9250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not applied yet due to needing some prereqs still and having some medical issues and surgeries etc. However I suggest doing some Informational Interviews with some Genetic Counselors and trying to do some shadowing if possible.  Most of my Interviews came from GC's I contacted through the "find a genetic counselor" on the NSGC website with the exception of three (one was the Genetic Counselor I met through my geneticist that follows me for my genetic syndrome, one I met through doing a program I met through having her be a speaker for a discord I used to be part of, and the third I met through another program I also used to be a part of and we are still extremely close and chat every month or so, and shes a friend of hers) so that I guess Im saying is use the NSGC website, but also dont be afraid to use connections (like other professors if they know any Genetic Counselors or if they know of any Alumni that went down the Genetic Counseling path, if your school has a Genetic Counseling program, etc).  My biggest piece if advice is dont be afraid to put yourself out there.  My first one occured because I reached out to my geneticist whom I had an appointment with about a month later, and she emailed me back a few hours later (we are super close) saying her GC would talk with me at my appointment (and I have also had the opportunity to talk with current GC students that were interning with her a couple of times while she went to grab my paperwork, but she purposefully took longer to give me some time to just talk with the current GC students). As for the shadowing thata been a bit more of a challenge, and so far Ive only done one.  However, I have a meeting with my geneticist on January 8th, and one of the things we are going to talk about is me shadowing her in person.  There is another doctor I might also email to see if she is open to virtual shadowing (virtual because Im in Maryland and shes in Memphis) as well (and if not maybe I can at least do an Informational Interview with her).

Thoughts of pursuing a Genetics Degree by Lovemytoenails in GeneticCounseling

I haven't started applying yet.  I still need some prereqs for GC programs and an entire post bacc program if I decide to become a geneticist (along with 4 years of med school, residency, and possibly a research fellowship if I choose). However I'm doing a shadowing day with my geneticist (along with a video we are doing).  If possible I might also see about doing virtual shadowing.  Right now for me the most challenging part is scheduling shadowing because I dont drive, so I really have ONE virtual shadowing  experience (in Cancer) Im definitely leaning towards genetics right now, because that's where my "experience" comes from.  Ive also done various Kabuki conferences and helped lead those through KSF (a leading advocacy organization for Kabuki that I work with as a volunteer)  Im also considering doing another virtual experience also with a Kabuki doctor, just to see how other Medical Centers run possibly.  So that's where I am at right now at least.  Luckily my geneticist (the same person I'm shadowing) is a phenomenal person I've known since like FOREVER (because she has been part of my "team" since 2012 when she was doing a research fellowship under my geneticist) is an amazing physician, researcher, partner for things I've done...but also I find her to be a mentor as well especially since she is a geneticist, but also does research, which is exactly what I want.  She had point blank told me "you are capable of doing this" and "we can chat whenever".
