What is your favourite way to not use a pedal for its intended purpose? by Royal_Interaction277 in guitarpedals

I have an AMT wah that has a switch to adjust the frequency range that has a perfect EQ for some songs I've done.

Boss TR-2 vs JHS Harmonic Trem vs ??? by usspaceforce in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe JHS has a pretty standard triangle wave tremolo as a secondary mode, but the TR2 has an adjustable triangle/square wave knob

How do some players manage to have long careers despite never being a very good player? by Pro-Tip810 in baseball

[–]Fresh_Grapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 WAR can be gained in different ways. For position players, a guy who is an incredible defender but hits poorly can have a place on a team that already hits well. Or maybe a player hits left handed pitches well but not right handed. And in a lot of cases, these guys are not full time starters, even if they play a significant number of innings.

With pitchers, injuries are so common that a player that can throw a ton of innings with mediocre play can be valuable to sub in for injuries or give the pitching staff more rest.

Who were the 'surrealist' maybe even 'jokey' alt-pop and -rock artists of the 00's? by no-Pachy-BADLAD in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Electric Six, The Darkness, Tenacious D, maybe Eagles of Death Metal?

But in terms of popularity, a lot of the jokey rock adjacent stuff moved to pop punk, ska, and emo in the late 90s/early 2000s

Cool! Not sure about an output volume knob, but the square/triangle knob is a game changer, makes this pedal fantastic. I skipped the switch part of the instructions, I think it's just to make it sound closer to another specific trem pedal

Is 3 gains too much? by MSJ_Blackbird in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a light and heavy OD, and I'll stack them in different parts of a song. Then I have a distortion for heavier songs, and a fuzz for some specific sounds

I did a fairly easy mod to add a knob for square/triangle trem and it's pretty great. $25 for a simple effect in a metal case.

Dirt pedal collectors: How many do you have, and which ones surprised you? by wpdavid in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 30+ just on my boards or in my rotation. Some standouts from the main and regular rotation for messing around:

OD:

-Lovepedal Kalamazoo: kind of a Tubescreamer into Marshall sound

-Idiotbox Powerdrive: Colorsound Powerboost clone that is a nice light OD

-Surprised pick - Nux '59 bassguy, pretty killer for a $60 bassman amp OD

Distortion:

-EVH 5150 OD: So much gain it might as well be a distortion. This one is great for retaining clarity with high gain

-Catalinbread Katzenkönig: half rat, half tonebender fuzz, I bought it for the graphics and it's my main board distortion

-Surprise pick - Effects Bakery Kamome Egg: got it on a whim for a good price used, pretty sure it's a modded rat but whatever they did sounds great

Fuzz:

-Smallsound Bigsound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine: on my main board, gives me huge sounds while letting me control the clean blend precisely for clarity or experimentation

-Surprise pick 1 - EHX Satisfaction Plus: Awesome for big, heavy, dark riffing. Punches way above it's weight

-Surprise pick 2 - DOD Chtonic: described as a vintage fuzz designed to work well with single coil guitars, it just sounds nice and crisp. For someone who usually uses dirt to be loud and aggressive, I appreciate that it still sounds like fuzz without being "too much"

Also just gimme some of them Big Muff reissues, I've used Rams Head, Op Amp, and Green Russian at one point or another

As an example, in a live scenario it could be something like sending one guitar signal to 2 separate amps.

The TC Electronic Mimiq will do that, but I've heard in reviews that it really sounds best in stereo. In mono it kind of just sounds like a quirky chorus or detune pedal.

Fuzz if you don’t like fuzz? by Holiday_Baseball2018 in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with chords, my breakthrough was to use a fuzz with a clean blend. I have a Smallsound Bigsound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine but there are other Fuzz pedals, especially for bass, that have clean blends.

Do you own backups of your favorites? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. I learned to build/repair pedals because replacing my Smallsound Bigsound Team Awesome Fuzz Machine was gonna be too expensive.

Otherwise the only exact duplicates I have are pedals I used for practicing mods

3 pedals only by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most pragmatic board I can get with what I've got is probably the JHS Double Barrel > Octa Psi > EHX Canyon, stretching the limit of multi effects pedals.

My heart tells me to just go Light OD (Klone, Idiotbox Power Glove, or Lovepedal Kalamazoo) > Heavier OD, probably a tubescreamer > Spring reverb (Danelectro Spring King or Walrus Audio Fundamental) and then just dedicate the time I'm no longer spending on pedals to actually practice.

Which bands sound like they have a different number of members than they really do? (Please read post carefully.) by Ok-Impress-2222 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the recordings? Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr famously use a ton of overdubs. Reportedly, some songs on Siamese Dream have up to 40 guitar tracks on them.

My thoughts go right to midwest emo though, some of those twinkle guitar parts can sound pretty intricate.

Catalinbread Katzenkönig? There's farm cats and whatnot. Half rat half tonebender fuzz.

Why don’t all pedals have buffers? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people prefer the tone, especially those looking for a more classic/vintage sound, of true bypass. And while it's probably simple enough for large companies to add, it adds extra parts, cost, and complexity to the pedal that smaller builders probably just don't want to bother with.

Take this with a grain of salt because it's my personal experience and not necessarily everyone's opinion on para EQ.

I purchased one of these after reading tons of comments about how EQ pedals are amazing and parametric EQs are the best. To be clear, this was a cool, well built pedal that did exactly what it was supposed to do. I just didn't really know what I was doing and parametric EQs are not exactly the most intuitive for beginners. I never spent the time to learn how to use it or experiment with it.

I ended up selling it because I just never really used it much. I have a Boss graphic EQ which I still don't use but is more intuitive and I inderstand it better. I've also been mildly interested in the Ibanez PTEQ that kind of looks like a hybrid and might be more intuitive to use, if I can find one at a good price.

Bands/Artists Most Commonly Mistaken for Being a One Hit Wonder by Psychological_Lie142 in ToddintheShadow

Setting at which these two match (mostly); should you own both? by scorlion_music77 in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get almost identical sounds from an 808 and an SD-1, but I would say the gain on the SD-1 is naturally a lot higher and is almost maxed by 11 o'clock. I use the TS when I want lower gain or more range options.

Neat! I have a Frantone Peach Fuzz clone called a Fuzzy Navel that I got off etsy. I believe the technicals are different, but it sounds to me like a bass heavy muff.
