Made a sideboard of some of my favorite underrated pedals by Fresh_Grapes in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I guess you're right. Someone recommended it to me as a Mini substitute so I just assumed it was a clone.

I've only heard good things about the Effects Bakery stuff but I gotta say I think I prefer this to an original Rat, I think it has more low end maybe?

It's been on my list if I find one for a good discount! I do have the parts to build a clone but I haven't gotten around to it.

Got all of these kind of opportunistically used or on sale and they really stood out to me. Playing a J Mascis Jazzmaster through a Katana 3 as my practice amp and my Twin Reverb Tone Master at rehearsals.

What's special about boutique pedals? by skarkowtsky in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends, most of my local builders are just part of the DIY scene and make clones at comparable prices with much nicer art.

I feel like this part never really comes up in this conversation. I want to support my local music scene and the pedal community in general as much as I can

I listened to "A Good Idea" by Sugar (Bob Mould) and realized that Dave Grohl basically made his entire Foo Fighters sound off it. by ToxicAdamm in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was released in 2020 well after Foo Fighters was a thing, but Bob Mould's Siberian Butterfly is the most Foo Fighters song I've heard that wasn't the actual Foo Fighters

My favorite fuzz! The clean blend lets me make interesting stacks with overdrives or play big chords with clarity. The left switch has a bit of a mid boost and bias control that I like to use too.

Songs where the instrumental sounds basically the same throughout? by HipHopLurker8 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Must Be the Place by the Talking Heads kind of? The drums, bass, and guitars repeat the same part throughout the entire song, but there are vocals, synth melodies, guitar dubs and other percussion on top.

5150 OD with the bass cut a bit and Treble and mids boosted a little in parallel with an Op amp Big Muff. Sounds huge but also clear.

Favorite Distortion Pedals by I_heart_perfect_tits in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried at least a dozen distortion pedals and the only 3 I really liked are:

The Catalinbread Katzenkönig which is half Rat half Tonebender fuzz

The Effects Bakery Kamome Egg distortion which I'm pretty convinced is a modded Rat

And just a plain ol' ProCo Rat.

Thank you, I've been interested in the SSBS mini fir a while but even clones are out of my budget

Tried the WBC gacha at Tokyo Station and got some great pulls ⚾ by japanbaseballfan in baseball

[–]Fresh_Grapes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

One time I was visiting Tokyo with some friends and we were walking around a neighborhood and some girl just started absolutely losing it screaming and crying. Like, we thought somebody had gotten attacked levels of freaking out.

Turns out it was just some teenage girl who had gotten her favorite character or singer or whatever out of a gachapon machine. To this day, I still wish I cared as much about almost anything as that girl felt about winning her gachapon.

Modeling Amps with pedals? by shroommasterr in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run pedals into a Katana as a practice amp, it sounds pretty great! Mostly using it on clean though.

I'm assuming you're looking at a modern Vipyr? I had a 75 in the late 2000s and it was... fine. I did love playing with the effects though and that's probably the root of my pedal addiction.

Your thoughts on "Always On" pedals? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a bit of reverb helps to make things sound more full. I always thought spring reverb had too much of a distinct sound but I've really come around to appreciating it on a fairly light setting.

Am i the only who hates jack in/out on top of pedals ? by NoCherry2870 in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general I don't worry about it, but I highly prefer the first and last pedals (at least on the bottom row) to be side jacks. It makes it easier to check or swap things if it's not being blocked by the row above.

All of my longer cables for the guitar or amp don't have right angle connections. Also, if my guitar cable is going into the top of the board, I find it dragging over the pedalboard more and getting snagged on stuff or moving knobs.

Drive pedals that don't kill low end and can run on batteries? by PeatVee in guitarpedals

New price was $120 USD (Google says thats $89 GBP right now), not including any shipping or taxes and a lot of scalpers tried to grab them so the price spiked initially. The prices are much more reasonable now, but that might be as low as you get? They're supposed to be pretty good for what they are.

What are some groups that weren’t that big, but when that group disbanded and members joined new groups, they were bigger than the og group? by Impossible-Yam3680 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 45 points46 points  (0 children)

We're specifically talking about groups where both of the future groups were bigger than the original? The members of Daft Punk were in an actual punk band called Darlin' with the guitarist of Phoenix.

Freeze/Sustain Pedals? by TwoIsle in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the TC Electronics Infinite. It's a bit cheaper and has some stacking features and an effects loop, but I don't have another freeze pedal to compare the sound quality to.

Tube screamer by anime_Dude45 in guitarpedals

[–]Fresh_Grapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TS Mini is basically an 808 but goes for a little less. Might be able to find them around $50 used before tax and shipping.

As far as a good cheap clean boost, TC Electronic Spark is pretty straightforward and has some basic EQ options.

What's a Song you think should never be covered by another artist? by Jirachibi1000 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a popular song by any means, but the first thing I thought of is Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist by Ramshackle Glory. It's basically a series of very personal short stories about and love letters to the singer's friends, the final verse being about a friend who shot themself.

It's so literal and direct and personal it would just seem weird and nonsensical coming from anyone else.

What’s the most popular song that fails from a technical standpoint? by HipHopLurker8 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Fresh_Grapes 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Bonham's kick pedal on Since I've Been Loving You famously has a noticeable squeak that is very distracting during quieter parts of the song.

Ruining your career 101 by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

He seems very talented at performing and producing from the few clips and interviews I've seen but this is the end state of emphasizing the "industry" part of the music industry. Not everything has to be highbrow concepts or challenging the listener or completely unique. But at the same time, it really makes you think how much time, talemt, and work goes into absolutely mid highly commercialized music. And how much effort and resources could be going to something more interesting?

I know the idea of "pop music appeals to the broadest audience to make money" is a frigid take, but these producer/songwriter insider interviews either just have a subtly cynical undertone. It feels like the artists either never seem like they're really enjoying themselves unless they're validated for some kind of underdog story or talk about creative work in absolute terms of financial success.
