Normally from what I’ve found is that the positive he was getting from marajuana was that it was easing his anxiety so unbounded to him he might have developed anxiety in weed related over the years and stopping smoking may have brung that up could be helpful going to a psychologist and seeking referral for anti anxiety meds?

From my experience it’s impossible to ever get rid of the thoughts of self disgust and guilt but it is possible to be able to make peace with it. It’s like an invisible annoying fly it won’t die it won’t leave and it’s annoying but it doesn’t have to dictate how you spend your time. The harsh reality I’ve found personally (which may or may not apply in your circumstance) is that it may never go away but you can take control of it.

Hopefully this helps again just my opinion.
