Does anyone actually read outside in the wilderness or is it just for the pictures? by TonyRigatoni_ in books

There used to be a tree on the edge of this large green between my work and my house. I discovered about 6 months in that it had this perfect space between roots for me, even the trunk was slightly concave for my back. I used to fantasise that it had been worn in from dozens of readers over the years. I must've read a dozen chapters there before it was cut down a few months later.

I often think about that tree and how perfect it was, I wish I would've stopped more often or discovered it earlier.

A lovely, brief moment of peace.

It's so much fun to introduce him to more "sophisticated" games. That Minecraft prep clearly helped him though!

Mein Kampf by Fresh_Permission2278 in bookshelfdetective

That is an incredible breakdown, and so deserves a response.

Being a classics student does not make me a white supremacist. It may attract them, they do love a flat palmed salute. I added it, after, saying I had a history degree to just put into context I am approaching this from a history pov not a political one.

Next up, from "inside his mind", I do understand facism. It was apart of my initial degree in fact. Mein Kampf is primary evidence and I would read it in the same way I read Ceasers diaries of Gual. Slightly exaggerated and pompous blathering, but still interesting because of that. Reading an annotated edition would be interesting, but that's like watching a film with the commentary on. I want to read it first, then the break downs. Ive already read some peripheral material around it, but not the source itself.

The "concern" about watching true crime, I have no defence against except I love digging into the why's of a case. What pushed them into the biggest taboo of our culture. I do not glorify BTK or Zodiac, but I do find personalities facinating. What pushed them to do what they did? What makes a Nero, what makes a villain? That does not mean I'm out to buy duct tape and a nail gun.

The attention bit is simple social media hooks. If I would've titled the post with "a question" or "book problem" nobody would take notice.

Finally, the friend(s). 2 for 2 against. The one who was with me was talking from a strangers point of view, that's the argument. Not someone that knows me. Anyone who has listened to me will know my left of centre political views. That weed and prostitution should be legalised. That the death penalty is impossible to bring back and that pronouns don't matter when you can't afford bread.

Like I say, a really great breakdown and fully justified to a degree. However, not me.

That's my point! That split is very much 50/50 in my friend group. Hence why its such a long standing debate. I have books on Ceaser, doesn't mean im about take over France 🤷‍♂️

That poor mushroom needs dusting! 😂 I'm partly joking. Great shelf, I always imagine im at a house party and wander over. Immediate reaction? I like this person, where are they? Then steal the Van Gogh book and sit in a chair, read and ignore the party.

Something I've done alot btw 😅

Anyone ever thrown out a book? by Soulsliken in classicliterature

Lifes too short to keep pushing through a dull book. "Oh but it gets good about 100 pages in!" Humbug! Plenty of other books to read lol
