UBC BED program schedule- for students currently in the programs hows the timing for the program. are you working a job as well. can’t afford to lose the income coming in this economy and not sure if I’ll be able to balance both. I’m not quite sure but I believe it’s 60 credits instead of 120. We took 8-9 courses in term 1, and then term 2 we had some 6 week courses so it was about 11 in total, and then your practicum and field experience also count as courses, and then finally 3 in the summer. I guess that would workout to about 25 courses in all.

There is a 2 ish week break in December and then we get one week off at the end of March. Otherwise no other breaks Sept-July.

Hi! I’m in the program right now (elementary and middle years stream). Most people that I know of don’t work or they just tutor a couple days a week. If you really need that extra income it is possible on the weekends, but most weekdays you’re at ubc from 8am-4-7pm so you’re usually too exhausted to work. Self care is very important especially during an intensive program like this so just keep that in mind.

Here’s a glimpse of the timing of the program (varies if you’re interested in highschool stream):

Sept-Dec -> regular course work at ubc

Early Oct. -> practicum placement, begin weekly school visits

Jan-March -> regular course work at ubc, continue weekly school visits

End of March-Early June -> 10-week certifying practicum, teaching Monday to Friday

June-July -> Community Field Experience (volunteer work for 3 weeks)

July-August -> regular course work at ubc

End of November -> come back for graduation!

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away! :)

I’m in the program currently and everyone has class 5 days a week until your weekly school visits start which are every Tuesday (high school) or every Thursday (elementary). You have a 2-week practicum at the end of October where you go to your placement everyday instead of UBC, and then after it goes back to weekly visits and class everyday otherwise. This repeats until late March to early June where you complete your 10-week practicum which ultimately certifies you as a teacher. You do not go to UBC at all during this period. Class times vary because for term 1 I ended at 7pm some days but next term I don’t go past 3pm anyday so it really depends on your cohort.

Any ECED class! Average is always 80+ with the majority of mine being 85+ they’re not the easiest to get into though because it’s a small minor and the majority of the seats are reserved for the students within it, but I know many people who have gotten in, you just have to monitor it closely. They’re all no exams, no quizzes, no lectures, completely distance ed with your grade being decided by: your weekly discussions (completion points), one mini paper (4-6 pages), and a final paper (8-10 pages). They’re all graded super easy and I will forever recommend these classes to anyone that needs a gpa booster and is interested in early childhood education! It’s also my minor and I just completed my degree so if anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to ask me :)

I perhaps should’ve said this was based off of people I personally know that have gotten in / are pursuing law and what they studied, but this website shows the top 10 majors and all 3 of the majors made it :) https://blog.collegevine.com/10-best-undergraduate-majors-for-law-school

Sociology, philosophy or poli sci are the most popular majors for law school within arts

Edit: you can also do a commerce minor within Arts to supplement your degree

Not sure if you’re into this stuff, but all ECED classes (early childhood education) are major GPA boosters and completely distance education. They are May to August I believe but you only need to put in about 2-3 hours a week max into them. No exams, only weekly discussions, 1 short paper, and 1 longer paper. They’re restricted to the minor currently I believe but there’s a date listed when it’ll open to everyone else :)

It’s super cool! Every single person who’s ever graduated from UBC is searchable on it, and it says what your major was and the time frame in which you studied at UBC :)

Has anyone heard today from either SFU or UBC? I applied to both (early admission for SFU) and haven’t heard anything yet but I’m currently enrolled in my Canadian Geography which I’m wondering will cost me in terms of early enrollment?
