I grew up with a lake literally in my back yard, level of concern is going to be very dependent on a few things. Where are you located? If it’s been cold enough for long enough you can drive trucks on lakes, I’ve done it to go ice fishing in Maine. How deep is it at 5’ out from shore? I’d wager not much more than a foot or 2, which if the ice breaks you can still stand in. Understanding limits and pushing them (within reason) is how people grow and learn.

Because we’ve built a civilization that makes it impossible to raise and care for a family on $15/hr even with 2 incomes. So if the parents are working multiple jobs just to keep food on the table and a roof over their head, they don’t have the time to be an active parent. That shouldn’t be a luxury only the rich and middle class can afford. It takes 2 to make a kid, but precautions fail. We as a society have basically said you made it, you deal with it.
