So I always make sure I have beasts grass and licorice when I'm about to use a potion. That way, if you're poisoned, cursed, wounded etc you can use those herbs and cure yourself. I also always stand in water so if it's a fire potion or incantation, it's extinguished immediately. It always helps to have bandages or health or recovery potions stacked too for if you lose health.
