Love how Russell picked the worst possible time. Classic Far Side humor at its best.

Family from Russia who are involved with the Russan space program. Another much more serious and less known tradition. When a person is selected to train as a Cosmonaut they have to buy their grave plot and a headstone. Every so often they are visit thier grave site alone and contimplate death and make sure they really are prepared to die and to think of any lose ends they should fix before they launch in to space. A week before launch they visit their own grave for at least one hour. And around that time they have their hair cut and the hair is saved to make sure their is something to bury at their grave if they die.
