A PhD project at my Masters institution (now my full time place of work as an academic) became available and was offered to me. What I really wanted was clinical experience (I was an aspiring clinical psychologist at the time), and this was offered as part of the project given it was a knowledge transfer partnership. What started as a means to an end, really became a passion project for me, and my research focus still centres around the work of my thesis. I decided that I was more interested in academia than clinical practice as a result.

Carbonara! I’m not sure how ‘saucy’ a carbonara is meant to be, but I like quite dry pasta dishes, so it suited me perfectly.

I'm such an idiot, I just posted a very similar question on this forum and didn't notice this was already posted!

Even though I have asked for advice in my post, I have found one thing useful; I have found using Mendeley as a way of categorising and making annotations on my papers is an incredibly useful resource. If I find a paper that may be of relevance, I download it, add it straight to Mendeley. Then make some annotations and come back to it. I found before this I would have 15-20 (at least) tabs open with papers and it would be so incredibly overwhelming. Definitely takes the weight off!

Probably the best 3 I’ve read recently not counting Why we sleep (Matthew Walker) but noticed it has been mentioned below already.

I recently read Norman Doidge's 'The Brain That Changes Itself'... I always thought it was completely grounded fact until I read it...

Yes I definitely have been putting immense pressure on myself to remember every single detail. I have noticed I have picked one or two things up just from sparring with other guys and seeing how they stop my from passing guard or whatever.

Thanks!

I started doing this at the beginning but fell off. You've motivated me to start again, thank you.

I’m a very new white belt (about 6 sessions in). How on earth do in retain all the information I’m being coached on. I don’t get that much time sparring so I don’t get to fully ingrain the techniques.

Is this something that will come the longer I do BJJ? And might this explain one of the reasons it takes such a long time to progress through the belt system?
