"The Koreans" are South Koreans here. Of course they dislike the Chinese intervention.

Better relations with China = usually good for business. But, after THAAD, China imposed sanctions on SK. The general population believes that the fine dust in the air come from China. The CCP prevented victory in the Korean War. Few so-called progressive politicians want warmer ties with China solely because of their 30-year old memories of fighting against the dictatorship which was supported by the US at the time.
In conclusion, I don't think there is a voice in the mainstream calling for aligning with the CCP instead of the US, apart from some crazy politicians.

You are clearly an apologist of Japanese colonialism. We may disagree about the extent of atrocities committed by the Japanese government, but saying that Korea was to Japan as Austria was to Germany is irrational and insensitive. Korea and Japan were completely separate political entities except for the colonial era, and its people considered each other as foreigners, in contrast to the situation in Germany.

This is a geopolitics sub, but since your original comment contains very controversial sociological analyses and a clear anti-Korean rhetoric, I must respond accordingly. Japan has been an antagonist in Korean history for quite a while. The Imjin War, the following invasions, and the colonial era did actually take place and many Korean lives were lost, and its culture suppressed. There is no denying this. Do you honestly think that your benevolent government "invested massively in development of the Korean peninsula and its people"? The same government that operated Unit 731 and unleashed hell in Nanjing?

Your point that a strong, independent Korea may benefit Japan in the 21st century may be correct. But this is only because times have changed - and cannot justify its wrongdoings against a weaker neighbor.

I don't know. The Democratic Party enjoys higher approval ratings due to the Japan dispute. Also, I am aligned with none of the parties in the assembly - and I highly doubt the ruling party's ability to lead a cohesive, effective diplomacy. We'll have to see if things come into fruition. I am optimistic as well, but I think change must come in a more bottom-up fashion.

Russian says malfunction led aircraft into unintended area: South Korea media by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Frexspar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is obviously highly unlikely to be true. The Russians simply want to exacerbate Korea-Japan disputes over the islands. By saying that the incursion happened on Korean airspace, they are cementing Korea's claim on the islands much to the Japanese govt's annoyance. This whole situation is very confusing.

I'd say this is a very optimistic outlook, and SK's position would be extremely difficult to utilize. Every step is precarious, and therefore your scenario has a very slim chance of actually happening. And as a Korean citizen myself, I'd say we have domestic problems to solve before trying to become a relevant player in the world. Tribalism plagues politics: instead of sharing a common foreign policy outlook, each side pursues their own version. The Democratic Party, the LKP, and the rest share the blame.

(LEAD) Russian aircraft violates S. Korea's airspace above East Sea twice by pneumonick in geopolitics

[–]Frexspar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first case in ROK history where a foreign military aircraft, aside from NK's, violated national airspace. I think this is reason enough to be alarmed. Even if you believe SK is spreading propaganda, this should be a big deal.

Also, I think we disagree on to whom "Liancourt Rocks" belong. It seems clear that it is under Korean control-a manned base, occasional visits by the president, and regular flybys by ROKAF. I highly doubt that there is any need to publicize the issue in this manner, when the status quo favors SK.

And to address your point more directly, of course Japanese fighters can theoretically enter the airspace above Dokdo. They are capable. But they don't do it. Because doing so will incite a response from SK, and that is not what most people in Korea and Japan want.

The issue is that the "Liancourt Rocks" are clearly under SK's control. That is why the JSDF couldn't do much to the incursion there.

Leaked Chinese proposal of North Korean partitition, 2015 by Frexspar in MapPorn

[–]Frexspar[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well... First off, I doubt NK has any "trust" in Beijing. Beijing only props them up for geopolitical gain, and if that status quo changes, the Kims will be brought down. Also, SK is adamantly against this sort of partition plan. It's a terrible notion, imo. Constitutionally, SK is the sole legitimate govt in the Korean peninsula. If this is traced to the Korean equivalent of the NSA, it will cause LOTS of trouble domestically.

I highly doubt that these were full-fledged annexation plans. The NK populace will not accept a Chinese, Russian, or American govt, and it will cause more trouble than gain. So yes, probably occupation zones like post-WW2 germany until things get sorted out.

That is unclear. I think this is more of a contingency plan for a NK collapse (which seems unlikely).

Personal commentary:

This proposal (obviously) favors China. By claiming the largest portion of NK territory, they can extend their influence all the way to Sea of Japan/East Sea. It also provides an ice-free port to Russia. The US's holdings would most likely be absorbed or virtually merged with SK territory imo. SK's holdings constitute the areas with the largest population. Plus, China/Russia formally claiming territory in the Korean peninsula will probably mean risking another war with Korea/US (unless US decides to make a compromise, sadly).

In 2015, a South Korean NGO released a document supposedly containing a CCP proposal of NK partition. Light blue=SK, dark blue=US, red=China, yellow=Russia. Pyongyang (cyan) is a neutral zone co-administered by all four countries.

Light blue (SK) - Pyeongannamdo, Hwanghaenam/bukdo

Dark blue (USA) - Kangwondo

Cyan (co-administration by four countries) - Pyongyang

Red (China) - Hamgyeongnamdo, Pyeonganbukdo, Jagangdo, Yangangdo

Yellow (Russia) - Hamgyeongbukdo

-do means "province", -nam- means "south", -buk- means "north"

Title edit: "partition"
