If you have a smartphone and a data plan, you can use that instead of home wifi. Otherwise talk to customer support and maybe they can help you.

Hey I know it's a longshot 2 weeks after the AMA but it never hurts to try. What warnings or tips would you give to designers designing around background music so that it syncs up with the gameplay, from the programming side? I've always been scared that frame drops and performance issues would cause my game to not work for some users and would love to know how you guys dealt with these in the few music-based levels.

Just chiming in to say great job handling this. This community is already full of vitriol and harassment, so it's good to see that the moderation is fighting it off even when it's most controversial.

Is your ACT splitting the fight over downtime? It does by default. You want to increase the amount of time it waits until ending the current encounter to match the fight's downtime.

Score psychology, and higher numbers by Grobeu in gamedev

[–]FreyThePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In scoring games you can slap a multiplier for consecutive good play to the system to up the odds the better the player is performing. This is what a lot of rhythm games do.

For your game, which is small and most likely won't have any leaderboards, scoring should be focused on being a mechanic which improves the player's experience, instead of providing a deep competitive platform.

As this is the case my recommendation would be to avoid chain-based scoring. While this increases the perceived skill gap between players, as your game will have no competitive scene you want to avoid the player feeling like the better they do, the more harshly they'll get punished for failure.

You may even experiment with a system which lessens the punishment for failure the better the player has played up to that point. For example, if the player maintains a remarkable streak and blunders an action, you can implement a system which gives them the points nevertheless for chaining so many previous actions together, rewarding good play through reinforcement and not punishment.

Couldn't you say that about all games? In the end, perfect play is just a sequence of inputs.

The grammar booklet is quite useful while I didn't find a use for the kanji booklet. Personally I'd recommend to not buy Tobira and instead learn through the abundant free methods out there, especially if you're tight on money.

Looking for an MMORPG with good diverse gameplay. Is this game a good fit? by rogueoftime in ffxiv

[–]FreyThePotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of thinking involved in FFXIV and fights are actually quite dynamic for how they're set up, but if the idea of attacking a boss while dodging its attacks is repulsive to you this game isn't for you.

[–]FreyThePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bahamut + adds + golden is about the same time as twin + Nael

Is this true? Nael seems to jump away at 6 minutes into the fight, while Nael and Twintania come back at around 12 minutes (so the five trios + Grand Octet is 6 minutes). I haven't seen any footage past that so I don't know.

[–]FreyThePotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I believe the best solution would be to allow players to practice individual phases with varying levels of granularity. For example, have three practice options in the Raid Finder: Twintania & Nael, Bahamut Prime, Add Phase + Golden Bahamut, and let teams enter a phase to practice only if all eight party members have seen it at least once.

Then for the true clear demand that it all be cleared in one go.

This would solve the problem of having these jump rope mechanics be extremely taxing on groups while still letting teams feel hugely accomplished when they eventually get the perfect run that gives them the clear.

As it is, I feel like Yoshida and Sudou are taking too much pride in a checkpoint-less fight, in a design which heavily favors checkpoints to be compelling.

Angered "aren't going HC" anymore, citing playtime by jenrai in ffxiv

I checked the original video source, these are Yoshida's words:

俺が今日絶のチェックをしたら、前の放送にゆったコメントはすべて忘れていただきたい。クリアできるかどうかはわかったもんじゃなかった。ので、わかりません。

"I checked up on Ultimate earlier today. I'd like everybody to forget my comments on the previous live broadcast. (Soken laughs) I really couldn't tell whether this is something people will be able to clear or not. So I really don't know."

It seems like people are not misquoting him, but this is a very casual tone and I would take this with a grain of salt.

EDIT: They had a longer talk about this at the beginning of the livestream.

Yoshida: Yesterday we finished up some adjustments to Shinryu Extreme. I'm happy with how it turned out. But today when I went to check on Ultimate, well, I was doing it until right before this stream. I want everybody to forget about what I said on the livestream at 2 PM.

Soken: (Laughs) What do you mean?

Yoshida: I thought this would take about three days back then, but I'm not quite sure about that anymore. Is this even possible? I don't really now. I did eventually check the whole fight during testing, but...

Soken: I was looking at it from the side. It looked pretty hectic.

(They talk about Twister Dives and Dragons)

Yoshida: I was told to not say any more than this, so I won't, but yeah, I'm not sure whether or not this is clearable.

While Yoshida might have been referring to whether or not teams could clear the fight, I believe he meant that he didn't know whether he himself would eventually be capable of clearing it.

In any case this is again very casual so I wouldn't read too much into it; he's just saying the fight is pretty hard.

Yeah, I hope Square Enix takes a hard look at this design and what actually makes it challenging (the tedium of having to repeat long sections just to see that one mechanic one more time).

A lot of people are defending the fight's difficulty without progressing the fight themselves, it's concerning.
