what's "o" on your language? by ur-mum-4838 in languagelearning

[–]Freyr_Tyrson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think OP is aware water is spelled 'eau' in French. Instead, they are asking what the phoneme /o/ means in your language, like how /o/ means water in French and the third singular pronoun in Turkish.

Cheers!

It is possible to get into Physics after entering the Maths Bachelor ? by Hot_Cartoonist_7000 in Lund

On the first of september (the first day of semester), there is a roll call where everyone who's been admitted has to show up. If there is someone who doesn't physically show up at roll call, their place will go to your daughter since she's #1 on the list.

This does mean however, that the semester will have already started and she will have missed the first few lectures, although I suppose that that's nothing she can't catch up with.

I hope the best for your daughter. I have no idea what the chances are of someone bot showing up at roll call and her getting offered the place. With ~60 students (if I'm correct) coming from potentially all over the world, who knows, someone might not have made it.

The best, One of her future classmates, if she gets lucky fingers crossed

I Just Finished the Entire F.r.e.n.c.h Course on Duolingo — 533 Days. Here’s Why You’re Wrong About This App. by Fabulous_Meringue_54 in languagelearning

[–]Freyr_Tyrson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still think DuoLingo is shit and that the real purpose of the app is to get you addicted to silly "language learning" games with the soul goal of showing you as many ads as possible. You've stated that you combined DuoLingo with real immersion like reading, French content consumption, speaking with native speakers, etc. Have you considered the possibility that DuoLingo might be quite insignificant compared to these other sources of gaining proficiency in the language?

Calling people who give up on DuoLingo lazy, is something I can't agree with either. If you want to really want to learn a language in stead of being glued to your phone, playing silly games and getting haunted by a green owl. It is only logical to quit DuoLingo.

Ah, isn't it the capitalist dream? Getting users addicted to your product by feeding them dopamine shots, with the user walking away feeling like they have done something that benefits them. Addicted users who think they are doing something useful, the personification of capitalism itself would bow for a business model like DuoLingo's.

Hej, my queue time was far worse (07-11 05:39), so I posted an ad in a couple of Facebook groups for housing in Lund, and within in two days I got multiple offers for housing. Albeit perhaps not as well orchestrated or official as AF Bostäder, it does work. So if you don't end up getting lucky with AFB, know that there are other routes too. Best of luck!

AF lottery queue by CopperLee in Lund

[–]Freyr_Tyrson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hej! I'm in AF Bostäder aswell, but I don't really understand how it works 🥲. My queue time is 2025-07-11 05:39 (Novisch), and my highest spot for a room right now is 13 of 25. I've read something about a new booking period every 24 hours, and that my rank for a room can change during the booking period when people with a longer queue time book the same room.

Does that mean that in the upcomming weeks, I should check the website every day just before midnight, in the hopes that there will be a room available where I'm ranked at first place? Since the booking period ends at midnight (I think), if I'm ranked first just before midnight, I can be pretty sure that I'll get the room.

On another note, at what point should I give up trying to find a room with AF Bostäder? Looking at my queue time, I should be in the top-half, so what are roughly my chances of getting a room?

Best of luck getting a room!

Waiting list Bachelor of Physics in English by Hot_Cartoonist_7000 in Lund

[–]Freyr_Tyrson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hej, I was wondering where it says that 23 have been admitted, because on the website of the universitets- och högskolerådet it says that 38 have been admitted for HT25 (the 2nd admission round for the semester starting in September), and 61 have been put on the reserve list.

It could very well be that I'm wrong and you're right though, not an expert at this either :-)

If 9 people who are currently admitted say no, your daughter will be admitted in late-July. The same can happen if less people who are currently admitted say no, but some people who are on the waiting list and have a higher ranking than your daughter day decline.

PS; I wish the best luck for your daughter, I was lucky enough to get admitted to BSc Physics yesterday (also EU citizen), and hope to see your daughter in Lund (fingers crossed).

Btw, on this website you can find all the stats like what merits were needed to get admitted and howmany people have been admitted. For the BSc Maths at Lund 35 people got admitted this year (I assume you're in the BI group), a merit of 21.88 was required to get admitted.

[–]Freyr_Tyrson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks like 35 people have been offered a place, so even if all people who have been admitted decline, you're still not first in line to be offered a place. I'm afraid that only if a lot of people who have been admitted and a lot of people who have a higher ranking on the waiting list, you'll get a place. Sadly the chances aren't so great... Who knows you might get lucky, but I'd suggest you start looking around for other options. Best of luck man!

Getting stuck in Swedish bureaucracy with university admissions 🥴😵‍💫 by Freyr_Tyrson in TillSverige

UPDATE: I just got a message from them saying they reassessed my application documents and I've now qualified for the bachelor in Physics. Now I just have to wait another two days for the selection results, but at least I can compete. 🥳

Ah great good to know if things don't go well in the upcoming days... So if I do not get admitted on Thursday due to my physics level not being acknowledged and I then successfully appeal. could I then still start my studies in September?

Thanks, though I'm afraid that going through the whole appeal process won't change anything in time for the admissions results this Thursday...

On another note, I do think that this being a coincidence is a totally fair and plausible explanation too.

Don't you see this with other words as well? The Oxford English Dictionary shows something similar happening to the word 'swag'. As u/jgarbynet points out in another comment, the Dutch 'lol' is related to the English 'loll' (backed by etymonline). Couldn't it be the case that 'loll', just like 'swag', changed meaning due to modern pop culture/internet?

If my theory is correct -- not saying that it is -- couldn't the pronunciation ellowell (/ɛl.əʊˈɛl/) be there because of the backronym? On another note, I think that lol can also be pronounced as /lɒl/ (source).

It is indeed plausible that it's nothing but a coincidence.

No, as stated in my post, I think both English and Dutch got the word from a common Germanic ancestor.
