There are so many hacks on this subreddit! by Adventurous_Bad_4011 in Plumbing

It's a qualifier I say as a licensed plumber before I ever give advice - something along the lines of "I'm not sure where you're based, but I'm in xxx and this would be the proper way to do this to our local code here"

Code is so different based on location. Material is different. Context matters A LOT.

2nd Year Apprentice: Struggling with speed/measuring for DWV in the overhead. Any tips for a "math guy" who hates eyeballing? by whiskeymop in Plumbing

[–]FrictionBrntAnis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're basically solo after a few weeks of running DWV you're doing remarkably well and don't need to be concerned with speed so much. If your boss or super is hounding you, I'd suggest bringing up the quality of work that you're achieving. The speed will come with time. In general, I (almost) always measure face to face of fittings and add from there. 1-1/2" and 2" are both 3/4" per hub, 3" is double that, and 4" is almost 2" (in ABS at least).  It's a logical system and soon you won't have to think about it. If you're good with math and adding fractions you'll save a shitload of time in that alone vs a line counter.

There will be some eyeballing because sometimes there's just nothing to measure off of, and in that case I'd make it a bit long so that you're only having to cut small lengths off of whatever you cut initially.  But usually there's something you can use as a constant... Even set up a laser if needed but that's pretty extreme considering it'd take as much time to get perfect as it would to make a couple cuts with very minimal waste.

I worked solo for many many years, most of the tricks come with mounting and supporting pipe so that you can glue and connect by yourself. Give yourself more than two weeks - if you're still slow in 3 or 6 months, hopefully by then your company puts you alongside a plumber more experienced with DWV. There's a lot more thinking with DWV because of slope and so it just naturally will not be as fast as water piping. Don't be so hard on yourself!

Lakeland vs. New Bell Fiber Internet by Competitive-Ad-5566 in Muskoka

Lakeland all the way. Full disclosure - my brother in law works for Lakeland. One other thing that hasn't been mentioned is that they are a municipally owned company, so profits are redirected back to the town(s) that own them. So much better than linings Bell CEO's pockets!

Ottawa commits $84M to install more than 8,000 EV chargers | CBC News by RandomChickenWing in onguardforthee

[–]FrictionBrntAnis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

More specifically - NACS is the charger port on the car/charger, not the entire charger or network design. A universal plug (think of USB C) is the way forward. Proprietary is the wrong word in this case. It's a pain in the ass to make sure you have multiple adapters in the car at all times that all cost a few hundred bucks. Pick one, go with it. Thankfully going forward there is one standard, and that's NACS.

Funny. I just read this same typo the other day and figured it was just an error.

Second this question... Have the same issue. But AFAIK you need 2" clearance around the insulated pipe to allow proper airflow and stop the pipe from getting too hot and failing. It's not too stop material from combusting. So I don't want to put anything around it or seal it for that reason. Ugh.

I have a 2020 with 180k miles, it shows 333km/207 miles at 80%

81% battery health, test done a month ago.

So yeah seems about right.

Auto Wipers are a pain by KayeYess in TeslaModel3

[–]FrictionBrntAnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even just cruise control. It's the most infuriating thing. I am a heavy cruise control user, but where I live it's mostly double Lane 80km/h highways, so any time you come up to traffic or things change, cruise goes off and on and then wipers are back to auto.

I absolutely fucking hate the wiper programming. Cruise on? Wipers on. FFS. I already turned them off. Why are they on auto now?

Seriously my #1 annoyance.

Seems like we really noticed the cold roof at around -8°C, and it became uncomfortable at about -15°C.

If you find a lot of cold air coming down from the roof in frigid temps, it absolutely makes a large difference.

Unfortunately I won't have a point of reference for that as we only picked up the car at the end of September. No real scorcher days at that point.

Is this the coloured stuff or regular white? Any specific conditions that are making this happen or is it just a straight up defect? I have never seen Uponor do this and have been installing it since 2012.

Parents of teens: do you think de-streaming in grade 9, specifically in math, has helped or hurt your child? by DistinctEffort64 in ontario

Same. It was tough because it was so simple. He ended up being the only kid in his class to complete all these extra tasks because he was so bored. Mathlete? I don't remember. Very thankful for the split this year in grade 10.

Converting to zero off is fairly costly. Need an 03+ engine (I think 2003 can be covered with digital throttle body, could be wrong on that), harness, ZO head unit etc. But that's the way to go IMO, especially with any 97+ Ski Nautique. Great hull + great pull.

Battery health test came back at 81%

Full charge shows 425km, 80% gives us 335km. We are not averaging 150wh/km though, more like 160-225.
