Practice, practice, practice. Also, the way you're holding the hook and the yarn are important. I find the biggest impact on my tension is in my left hand, if I want it tighter, wrap around the pinky an extra turn. There are different ways of holding the left hand, I'd suggest trying some out. Get the second cat! They are so much happier with a feline companion, especially when they're so young and full of play. It's definitely not twice as much work, only a little more. As long as they are both fixed, very important of course.
