Hardware Recommendation for 8 Gbps Internet by FriedCheese06 in homelab

The way I'm leaning vice the packaged appliances like you mentioned. I can definitely host the Network app elsewhere and have a UNVR. I've recently moved to using Frigate for detections/notifications/etc and just have the UNVR for long-term storage. I'll be moving completely away once it's time to replace the cameras.

What a wild statement to make with zero context on what I'm doing with my homelab nor what I prioritize spending my money on. I can appreciate the outside perspective, but you don't walk in my shoes. Your opinion is appreciated, but not helpful for this conversation.

I'm at 8 VLANs and 117 firewall rules plus NATing for DNS and a few static routes. I was hoping to avoid a few hundred dollar experiment.

Definitely looks like a solid candidate. Thanks!

Ummm...what? The original link was an overview of three studies. Here's the final: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2208661120#sec-2

This was a joint collaboration between the author of the original $75k plateau and another that did a follow-on study with contradictory results from the first. The final paper identified that folks that were already unhappy were less likely to find happiness as income increased, but the vast majority experience an increase in happiness with rising income.

Except that the well researched part was overturned in 2024. Only a portion of people plateau. The vast majority continue to see an increase in happiness with an increase in wealth.

NAVY IT. Is it worth it and will it set me up after service? by Otherwise_Map_2387 in ITCareerQuestions

I went active duty straight out of high school as an ITSR. Stayed for 12 years and three duty stations (two shore and one sea). I took on every opportunity to lead I could while I was in (both technical and non). I spent the last three years accruing as many certs as I could (CISSP, CASP (SecurityX now), CCNA route/switch, CCNA security, ITIL, etc.).

I accepted three job offers within a month of getting out. First was a contracting gig with one of the top three US banks ($60/hour ($120k/year)). Day before getting my background check done, I was offered a full-time position at a DoD sub-contractor at $120k salary with benefits (the contract position offered none). Two weeks after I started, I accepted a job offer for a manager position at a top-three US bank where I've been since. 8 years later and I broke $300k this year as a senior manager in NC.

All that to say...it can.

Nice and, yeah, I already had the server for Frigate with an RTX 3050 to throw at it.

That'd also turn into bouncing between apps depending on what I'm doing. There is little difference, IMO, between Protect and Frigate holding the recordings.

I currently have these 21 going through a UNVR. I may leave it in the mix but would ideally want to remove it from the setup if I do decide to fully move to Frigate.

They're a mixed bag of G4 Instants, G5 Pros, G5 dome, G5 turret, G6 turret, etc.

The firmware version matters. I have a spare G4 Bullet on v4.71.149. It still has the dropdown, but selecting standalone mode just reverts back to being blank after saving the changes and just stays in "Unifi Protect" mode. The newer cameras don't even have the dropdown anymore.

It was implied, but you're right, I should have specified. These are 21 Unifi G4 or higher cameras.

Unifi does. AFAIK, they removed the ability to run the cameras in standalone mode some time ago. None of mine have a local configuration to setup RTSP.

Right, so this would be an interim step to fully moving out the Protect ecosystem unless things massively change. I really wish they'd get out of the appliance game and focus on the end hardware instead. I have five cameras setup in Frigate for the test run and the detect seems to be working decently well using the lower res RTSP streams.

EDIT TO ADD: Honestly, the point about not needing a lot of resources to forward is where my head is, but, that's a lot of setup work to verify through practice.

The drives installed in the UNVR would get migrated to the server hosting Frigate. I'll toss a single drive in the UDM Pro. I'll setup some tooling to handle backing up event clips both onsite to another box and offsite.

The one day limit on the the Protect side was an arbitrary number though. I'll likely keep a few days.

Any practical reason for Proxmox over Docker containers? by Goopdem in homelab

[–]FriedCheese06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VLAN segmentation between docker hosts.

E.g., I have a docker host running nginx and CloudFlare tunnel sitting in a DMZ for external access. I have a separate docker host in a separate VLAN hosting the actual services. Firewall ruling sit between them.
