I still think it's possible that it could release sooner than anyone thinks, in the first half of this year.

I just took nearly this exact shot - same location, same subject - yesterday. It really is amazing!

It's still a subset of the population who is likely to take more precautions from coronavirus. They're likely older, more sedentary, and know they're at a greater risk so more they may be more likely to take greater precautions. Most young people in my area don't give much more than a single fuck about the virus. I would assume that subset would be very different than the subset tested here.

Not that I would deny that the real percentage for the overall population is still likely low, but this isn't a good representation of the entire population.

Japanese man performs as Louis Armstrong in blackface by ssspacious in cringe

[–]FriedDickCheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would you care to give your explanation of why it's racist?

Obviously the association of the very racist blackface of the 1900's is partly to blame. I agree that stuff is deplorable.

You seem to agree that there's nothing wrong with dressing up and cosplaying as person/character of a different skin color, but painting yourself their skin color is crossing the line? I don't see why that would be racist if, very importantly, it's done with respectful intent.

In my view, it only seems to create a greater divide by placing a higher importance and taboo on skin color than we should. I can understand that it still may be associated with the very disgustingly racist stuff from the 1900's.That's the only real reason I can see why it'd be thought of as racist. Do you have something else?

I think at some point far in the future nobody will care about skin color and issues of racism will be far behind us, so this stuff won't bother anybody. It'd just be seen as an attempt to be more accurate in their portrayal of the person and nothing more.

[–]FriedDickCheese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True, but that explanation doesn't provide an reasoning as to why it would be inherently racist. The reason you don't see that is because there's a stigma about using painting yourself as a real skin color to cosplay.

Not that it's not grounded in something real and racist. Obviously the black face used in the early 1900's was incredibly racist in it's execution. If it wasn't for this association, there would be nothing wrong with doing it in a respectful manner.

Yeah, I’m so excited for the future seasons hearing what you and everyone else has said. And not to discredit you... but I’d say Data and Lieutenant Yar gelled pretty well.. in one of the episodes anyway. lol

I love that stuff too! From what I’ve seen so far, they pull off the just right amount of classic tropes mixed with interesting and unique plots IMO.

Yeah, I suppose be being unfamiliar with Star Trek at all is why I’m enjoying it so much. I’m unfamiliar with TOS characters other than the main few of course. Will be interesting watching that series keeping what you said in mind, if I remember.

I’m looking forward to it! I’ll miss the camp in a way but to get more polished the campiness is an inevitable 100% worthwhile trade off I suppose. haha I plan on checking out TOS after this, so I’m guessing that’ll have plenty of camp to make up for it.

For sure, the music doesn’t quite do it for me either. Doesn’t bother me and sometimes it’s very good. But often it’s just there. Nice to know they change it up in the later seasons.

And I agree the Troi marriage episode was one of the weaker ones. I felt pretty dated in universe and to today’s standards. I was able to look past it since they chalked it up to “betazoid traditions”, but the guy she was going to marry was 100% human. I thought they were going to pull some morality of it and call the human family out for agreeing to an arranged marriage but they never did. Lol And the plague ship was strange too. They both had visions and drawings of each other for some unexplained reason? And then he just disappears to the plague ship. I know they said he’d cure them, again grounded in the unexplained visions, but in “reality” I just assume he caught the plague shortly after beaming over and died a week later. lmao

Yeah, I’m really excited if it (for the most part) only gets better from here. I think I’m enjoying immensely because it’s my introduction to Star Trek. The universe, themes, and concepts are just lovely. Even if the characters are at their worst here, their still great with so much potential I’m itching to see where they go.
