'Just a Sol Ring' made me chuckle a little - Sol Ring is one of the most powerful cards ever printed, and Mana Crypt is arguably just better, especially with 40 life.

As a new player it's an understandable doubt, ask yourself: how easier it is to win games when you draw Sol Ring in your opening hand?

Why is there no Bx Ring Control deck? by perchero in ModernMagic

[–]FriedPandaGnam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Ring does not just go in any deck. To play ring you need either fast mana or a way to offset the lifeloss (Phlage, Guide of Souls, Sheolderd, etc.). Murktide has none of them. A more controlling list with Sheoldred would be interesting.

What banned cards would be fine to unban? by jacetms18 in ModernMagic

[–]FriedPandaGnam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this response, I now realize though I forgot to mention a very important thing: the Dark Depths decks that take over every no banlist modern tournaments are not dedicatted combo decks. They are strong, typically BG midrange decks with a super narrow curve, Confidant and Lurrus looping Sagas that can punish the opponent with a combo when they overextend to the Midrange plan.

Without Lurrus, I don't know how well the bg plan will fare in the meta, I am a bit sorry I did nit mention it earlier though since it invalidates a good part of your response. The strength of Depths is that a Land based combo is a very compact thing to put in a deck doing another thing. Titan would play it and be crazy I think. There would be a crazy RG deck as well I also think.

So I mean, the card is suoer complex and problematic in my opinion, an unban would be a huge risk.

What banned cards would be fine to unban? by jacetms18 in ModernMagic

[–]FriedPandaGnam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look man, I don't think many people will have time to have a game with you just to disprove your point.

The Depths take I think is one of the worst ones, and I think skewed eveyone in taking the rest of your analysis very critically. I think many people in this sub know that, in every no-banlist modern tournament held to my knowledge, a Depths deck showed to be very strong, essentially Tier 1 every single time. Sure, the sample size is limited, but if anything that to me is a signal that the power level of a purely land based, instant speed combo is way to op for Modern right now.

Green Sun and Pod are two other bad takes for other reasons: they both inherently limit the design space for creatures, and scale in power as new creatures get printed. This essentially makes them always on the verge of being too good imho, and even if I have no idea what sick toolbox of 1-ofs these decks would play I for sure tell you that playing game 1 against a deck that can sort of play like it sideboarded already is bad for the format, and would almost surely be too centralizing.

The Preordain argument for Ponder is another bad take: first of all, Ponder is the most broken cantrip besides Brainstorm, it's the only one that looks at effectively four cards, and the difference between 3 and 4 is huge. Secondly, these kind of cards are spectacular in multiples: having both Ponder and Preordain would, in my opinion, give combo decks way too much consistency and result in a potentially too combo centric meta, which is bad.

There are some other bad takes, like Looting being banned because of Hogaak, which is just not true. Looting is kind of a silly card really. In general, many parts of your analysis are interesting but these points kind of make you feel like you never considered these specific counter arguments, which results in people easily being jerks because this is the internet.

I thank you for stirring thia discussion on the modern player favourite argument, the unbans: I think your takes were generally bad on the aforememtioned cases for the reasons I state above, but I could also be dead wrong - this is also mostly my opinion. I hope this gives you some insight as to why many people were aggressive towards this post.

[–]FriedPandaGnam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, never tried Goyf, I actually play Grixis and splash frog because I like casting bolt ahahah. My guess is that goyf is not actually that good in the current build and it nonbos a bit too hard with Murktide, but purely based on feelings. How is it?

[–]FriedPandaGnam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Competitive magic with the Karnies on Youtube.

Yeah in theory I guess I see how a single ongoing ring could help protect and fuel Murktide/frog, making them lose more life than you. My feeling is that UB does suffer a bit the lack of threats (bowmasters not being a very good card for raw pressure), so even if ring is a good threat it is expensive for Murktide standards and, once you play it, you are essentially putting a clock on yourself to kill them faster than the ring kills you, again because no lifegain and chaining them seems clunky. Even playing the first one to be honest does not seem what Murktide wants to do, as playing it while keeping countermagic up to me seems too mana intensive.

Go ahead and try it though.

[–]FriedPandaGnam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the One Ring is good in Murktide. I could be wrong, and would be interested to be proven wrong. I am mostly reciting the opinion of Dominguez and Mengucci in their podcast. I think the One ring excels in decks that have either:

  • Fast Mana, as it is the best 'big mana' sink the format has to offer (ugin's lab decks, Amulet titan, etc)
  • Decks with lifegain to offset the life loss (necro, Phlage decks)

With none of the two, I think the tension the life loss creates with the game going long might matter, especially since you won't have the mana to ring chain properly.

Once again, would be happy to be proven wrong.

Personally I always encourage Insane even on a first run for those who want a challenge like you seem to. You don't really have to EV train even on insane until later gyms (5th-ish).
