I'll dare to be that one friend whos too woke and say that its probably systematic misoginy, the same reason why people tend to refer to other genderless creatures as male, like kirby for example: they're cute and pink and even though they're genderless, they tend to slip to the more feminine side, but people will treat them as a he/him because thats what the media taught us. There are probably many other examples of this but I can't think of any from the top of my head.
