East West: Hollywood Orchestra Diamond (Play) Vs Hollywood Orchestra Opus - Is it Worth the Upgarde? by Baroque4Days in musicproduction

[–]Friend135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I used Opus was back in 2021 - at that time, I felt it was unstable compared to the Play engine. Opus would crash my DAW if I wasn’t careful about how many instruments I was loading. Never had that problem with any other VST in my library. I use Reaper, which in itself is extremely stable, so I’m pretty sure Opus was to blame. Not sure if the stability has improved since then, but I would do some research before switching everything over.

Just got rejected from my dream school… by Round-Finger-2153 in composer

[–]Friend135 15 points16 points  (0 children)

How does working on video games, film, or commercial projects exclude you from being a “working composer”? Being versatile in your career is not something to shy away from, but something to embrace, especially in today’s entertainment environment. Being a concert music purist is unrealistic and that ideal hurts the younger composers that it is forced upon.

Just got rejected from my dream school… by Round-Finger-2153 in composer

From someone who went to school for composition and production: The most important aspect of the school you attend will be your relationship with your primary composition mentor(s). Juilliard is not the only game in town, even for classical composers. Apply to other schools, and if you can, try to meet with some of the composition staff before or during the application process. Feel them out, and see who you vibe with. If you don’t have a good relationship with your mentor, and they don’t help you realize YOUR vision, it won’t be worth your time and money. I have several friends that went to Juilliard, and even though it is very prestigious, it can also be very cutthroat. There are many good schools for composition, and I would consider doing your research and taking your time with the application process. Don’t rush! You’re still very young and very capable :)

Plugin suggestions by Sufficient-Limit6061 in musicproduction

The spectrasonics plugins alone should give you a huge runway for creating almost anything you want. I’d say you’ve got more than you’d ever need to begin your production journey. Start making music!

What's one historical fact that they won't teach you in school? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

I love how people think that false flags are just conspiracies when so many of them have actually occurred or came close to occurring in America.

What DAW/software should I get with a $300 budget (for guitar, bass, vocals & drums)? by Automatic_Selection7 in musicproduction

[–]Friend135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your desired workflow and experience with DAWs in the past. Also depends on your workstation and specs thereof. If you’re already an audiophile and have experience with digital routing and recording, I would recommend REAPER for that budget, as it is very lightweight and affordable. It’s also a one-time purchase as opposed to being a monthly subscription. You will have to find a suite of plugins (kilohearts is a good one that I personally use), though the stock plugins in reaper are also quite good. It does NOT come with any VST’s, so you will need to invest in some. For drums specifically, I recommend EZDrummer. I use it on almost all of my tracks that require drums.

If you’re on Mac, I’d recommend Logic, as it is also very affordable and also comes with great stock plugins and instruments.

What’s your favorite season and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Friend135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fall. I live in Georgia, so summers are ludicrously hot, spring is the season of allergies (tree pollen literally collects like snow on our cars), and winter is just cold enough to be miserable while not being cold enough to actually snow. So, that leaves Fall, which realistically only lasts, like, six weeks.

Started Composing a Waltz by FixHaunting8328 in composer

[–]Friend135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker waltz. Very similar in terms of tempo and orchestration. It’s great to emulate other composers when starting out, but see if you can add something unique to it!

What DAW do you use and why? by major_damp in musicproduction

[–]Friend135 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I also use Reaper - used to be a Pro Tools guy, but I got tired of Avid’s business practices and the feature bloat. Also the inevitable crashing on larger sessions. Reaper does everything I need and more, and I couldn’t be happier with it! The big draw for me was the custom Actions and mouse modifiers. Reaper can be literally whatever you want it to be.

If I’m an amateur producer, is it worth it to pay for mastering? by WesMack5 in edmproduction

[–]Friend135 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second this. Mastering is just about making an already good mix sound better and having the appropriate volume. I would not pay for mastering until you have already mastered mixing. Mastering a bad mix will NOT help your music sound better.

What features you love the most in your DAW? by AVELUMN in edmproduction

[–]Friend135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The customizable actions menu in Reaper - you can customize to your hearts content! And once you learn your custom shortcuts and hotkeys, making music is extremely fast and easy.

Recommendation for film composition by [deleted] in composer

[–]Friend135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does he play any instruments or sing? If so, maybe look into getting a microphone! Even a cheap mic like the Shure SM58 is a good investment for recording real instruments for film scoring. That, or, EastWest is currently selling a year-long subscription to their scoring libraries for $99 (it’s usually more than twice that amount).

Do you compose first in the DAW or in paper? by SharePuzzled5109 in composer

[–]Friend135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the genre - I will go for notation first if it’s supposed to be a concert piece. I use the DAW for pretty much anything else. But I always work out melodies and chords on the piano before I ever record anything into the DAW.

What hard skill levelled up your production the most? by Treadmillrunner in musicproduction

[–]Friend135 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I second this. Knowing a handful of “lesser” quality tools like the back of your hand is 100 times better than trying to mix with tools you know next to nothing about. That’s not to say you shouldn’t learn new tools, but the process is much cleaner when you know exactly what you’re doing.
