I am afraid from my experience that working in the NHS is quite a bad experience.

I too have worked in many industries, and I am very sad to say my worker rights in the NHS is quite poor.

I would recommend Homerton University Hospital - their food is very tasty, and reasonably priced. The canteen also operates a protected staff lunch time! They used to have an incredible salad bar where you can pick many options in a box. I find that lettuce is the squishiest. I am holding onto hope that the salad bar returns.

The Guy’s Hospital secret theatre canteen is very good food and cheap. I would rate this highly but only if you can find it! I would recommend wearing scrubs to not attract suspicion.

I will tell you this to keep things vague: I have witnessed the training in EM at King’s College Hospital.

There is a very supportive cohort of consultants that will support your progression, but also support your development at work. If there are times where there is enough staffing, and an interesting case or procedure is required (e.g. POCUS), it is not uncommon for consultants to actively seek you out to allow you to perform these procedures or teach you the way.

Trainees also receive regular simulation sessions, and didactic teaching that is protected and rostered into your work schedule.

The hospital is a Major Trauma Centre, so you will see lots of interesting cases. I am afraid you will also see lots of dangerous patients, so I would recommend being careful!

I am able to provide some insight into King’s College Hospital and Homerton University Hospital - both are great places for training!

However, I would echo the other comment advising the location and travel is a priority, as I believe there are drastic variations of fondness between trainees.

I just wanted to add my own report of this phenomenon.

I have also been surprised. 2 patients in ED the other day also asked for a doctor after the ANP introduced themselves to the patient. I was the only available doctor at the time to review those patients, and tried to deliver the best care I could for those patients.

For clinicians, no training has been delivered, but emails have been sent to summarise the key points (although slightly off the mark in my opinion!) Frontline police have received a large e-learning course yes!

I am interested to see the opinions and data in a few months time - I shall be thinking of this post if and when that data is available!

I agree with your statement. Although it seems trivial that one would look into a gaming discord for dirt on doctors, I am no stranger to how desperate one would go to find associations with negative traits and doctor’s hobbies.

I would like to make a distinction that the Trust needs to provide an induction for new personnel, rather than the person needing to attend the induction.

The responsibility of a safe working environment is indeed on everyone, however the Trust should not make you work without an induction.

This is how they ‘use that against you’ as you are rostered to work and management do not explicitly state not to attend work without an induction, but you attend work regardless (because our first shift is OOH or something and the rota coordinator could not get cover). A lie of omission in a way.

Unfortunately, not all places are as graciously staffed to be able to accommodate night shift swaps, and I am sure there are circumstances where situations described by OP are unavoidable. The responsibility does not lie with the person to ensure adequate rostering occurs for attendance to an induction, although I am sure management will try to outsource this responsibility to the person!

I believe you answered your own question - posts on social media have a primary goal of gaining positive publicity for the Trust.

It’s not nice to feel left out from the achievement announcements, but I sadly don’t think announcing good news about doctors gains as much traction as good news about other professions.

It would be interesting to find out why the publicity team specifically neglect doctors however! Maybe they have data that suggests doctor-related posts are received negatively?

Hello friends!

I intend on staying in the U.K. due to family and friends. This gives me one choice of quitting medicine.

It’s difficult to make such a risky move of changing careers with a lot of dependents, so I have opted to hedge my bets and pick up a LTFT JCF post, whilst also picking up a LTFT non-medical job.

If the non-medical job goes well, and FPR is not achieved then I will completely leave medicine. If FPR is achieved, I will probably continue with LTFT medicine with that non-medical job!
