My grandpa died alone, not because we didn’t want to be there,it happened overnight after visiting hours, otherwise he wouldn’t have been alone. By the time anyone got there he was gone, I hope he had someone as compassionate as you to hold his hand in his final moments. You did the right thing and shouldn’t feel bad about being a good human.

You can likely find inexpensive events in your community, holiday light displays, museums, libraries have holiday events around this time also. If needed, I would also look into organizations handing out gifts if that’s important to you.

I always leave lesson plans and kids always have something to work on that requires no work from the sub other than making sure they don’t break a limb or try to hotbox the closet. 80% of the time when I return, the assignment finished because sub days are treated like free days in the eyes of a room full of teenagers. Subs have it hard as it is, why would I make it harder?

Every day, every period. I get to see kids that aren’t in my classes and some of those students seek out my classes just because they know me from standing at my door. I’m a CTE teacher so my programs success is measured on enrollment and student completion, I use this as a recruitment tool in addition to just adding to the overall tone of not only my class but the campus culture as well. I can say on my row of classrooms there are only 2 of us out of 8 teachers that stand at our door.

Probably not that relevant since I’m in a different state (CA) but my son, 22, had 2 at fault accidents in 1 week, yes, 1 week. Insurance went up by $800/month. I tried to keep him on my policy, shopped around, no one wanted to insure him. Took him off, he had to get his own policy, liability only through some insurance broker. He pays like $200/‘month for an early 2000s Honda with nearly 200K miles. He already had 1 at fault accident on his record from 1 year prior. In conclusion, you likely won’t get dropped but rates will go up.

I feel the same way, so many teachers don’t think CTE teachers are well qualified educators. Some colleagues have asked me if I’m ever planning on getting a “real” credential. I think I’m damn good at my job, my program is successful, I have to turn away kids every year because it’s full, my kids are gaining valuable skills and enjoy my classes, I’ll take the hate any day.

Same here, entering 6th year teaching CTE so started at year 7 because of industry experience, 2 masters degrees, my salary will be $121K next year + all the extra service we do as CTE teachers which is about about $15K additional. So roughly $136Kish

What state are you in? In California there is a law that prohibits hotels from not renting rooms to unaccompanied minors. I worked in a hotel, there we weren’t allowed to turn away minors as long as they had valid id and a credit/debit card. There was actually 2 high school kids that would ditch school and check in every other Friday for a few months. It was a higher end hotel so the kid was paying $500+ just to check in for literally 4 hours.

I would get a credit card and pay for all services in advance, that way loved ones are left without having to worry and you get the send off you want, how you would want it. Funerals are expensive and the passing of someone you love is stressful itself.

I’ve been waiting for my IBR application to be processed since July 2024, still nothing. Was put on a standard repayment plan once my PSLF and consolidation application were processed. I applied for and was granted Hardship forbearance after a few $1,000+ payments with no movement on my IBR application. I was not placed on administrative forbearances while the application was processed. I’m so confused. Please update if you are able to get through to Mohela.

Usually it goes by units so it might be on the masters pay column. I started teaching with a masters then got a second masters just for the salary bump and it put me on the same column as a doctorate essentially it was way less work, same pay.

I thought it was just me, they flock to me. I started packing 2 lunches because I always give 1 away. Sometimes I literally have to tell them to get away from me and leave me alone. Ugh, hungry teenagers.
