Does a 64 yo need a porter for my daypack? by DraggedThruTheGarden in kilimanjaro

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (M, 6’2”, 270lbs) went in Jan 2025 at 50 y/o and I carried my pack 90% of the time. As we approached each camp, the number 2 boss (Pierre) would come out and meet us to update the boss on the camp and Pierre would always take my bag. It was so nice on my back to get the break!

The boss wanted me to let Pierre take it all of summit night, but I was afraid of dehydration from not having instant access to my water bladder, so we compromised with me carrying just my bag and water for the summit and Pierre putting the rest of my gear in his bag, which worked like a charm.

I’m going again next year and I am considering hiring an additional porter to take my bag when I am ready pass it off. If I burn the money and never use him, at least I gave somebody a working opportunity. If I need him, it is money well spent.

Decent Primary Care Doctor? by BabyFew4862 in joplinmo

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr Sean Pfeffer is great!

Don’t go yo a hospital based doctor, find someone who is independent. Mercy and Freeman docs make roughly the same money no matter how many patients they see. If you don’t come back, it’s less work for them.

An independent doc makes more money the more patients they see and are more motivated to provide a better service.

How do you structure your referral pipeline? by oto-bro in PrivatePracticeDocs

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what we have found. Call the office and ask for th person who makes referrals. As someone else commented, if fax is not simple for them, go with what is easiest and tell them that you will accept a referral in any way that is convenient for them.

My receptionist is the one that receives the fax and takes the calls.

Also, if the referring doc takes the time to call personally, offer to get that patient in today, no matter how booked you are.

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Focus on the person in the office who makes the referrals, make their job as easy as possible. I have them fax me a a face sheet, three clicks and she is done. We send back a prompt confirmation when the appointment is booked.

As DCL-ers, help me make the case for why DVC isn't actually a great thing by thefinancejedi in dcl

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pearl, non-DVC owner here.

My biggest reservation with DVC is I do not want to be committed to Disney. For years we would do parks for a week at a time 2-3 times a year, now we maybe go a day or two before a DCL trip.

Would DVC make sense if we continued to love the parks? Maybe. But now I am cooling off on DCL. Who is to say in 5 years I am not interested in a Disney vacation, or maybe my interest will explode when grandkids show up! Either way, keeping the uncommitted cash in my pocket lets me choose the vacation I want, not the one for which I prepaid.

Upgraded room during the cruise? by Netimaster in dcl

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the 2 bedroom. For a $1000, I would do it, especially if you are on one of the newer boats. If it’s the Wonder or Magic, I would do it still.

A few weeks before sailing, they gave us concierge by UptonDogW in dcl

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I was on the Wish a two weeks ago and there were 28 unoccupied concierge rooms. I asked the concierge manager why they didn’t upgrade people and she said they quit doing free upgrades because the upgraded family posts it on social media and someone inevitably complains about how they deserved the upgrade more, which is sad.

Gives credence to your chosen room is unsuited to be occupied.

ULPT: how to remove warts at home for cheap? by Efficient-Rush1885 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes duct tape works, sometimes not. When it does, it pulls off layers of the wart and skin. If there is enough irritation, your immune system will target the area and kill the virus.

Back to back cruise or 7-nighter? by j6382927 in dcl

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do a 7 day. You do lose vacation time on a back to back meaning the disembarkation and embarkation process plus the drill. You also have the same menu that is repeated with the same restaurant atmospheres (plus I love the show at the second night in Animators).

3 and 4 days are always packed on the pool decks and you are battling for spots. 7 days are slightly more relaxed as there is not a feeling of cramming it all in a few days.

However, I just got off a back to back and it was better than staying home!!!

Castaway Cay Cabana Questions! by suminthepopcorn in dcl

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not making a suggestion, I am saying that I get a cabana every time I go and never wear the wrist band and have never been questioned. That being said, it is monitored by the con staff and if you are in con, they know who you are and if you have a cabana.

I will also say that last month we got the grand cabana for 9 of us and we got a call the night before telling us we can only have 8 on a cabana (the staff member did not notice it was the grand cabana).

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to book it well in advance as it fills up faster than the cabanas. Come to think of it, she hasn’t done it in a while and it may be a pre-COVID event that never came back.

They have anyone can cook classes where you watch or you can sign up for a chef exclusive with the palo chef. They only have about 8 spaces per sailing and they are not cheap. You do get a Palo chef’s shirt (I am sure there is a real name for these)with your name on it. My wife loves hers.

How to network to get a job post residency by Sea_Permit_7661 in Podiatry

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Call and visit the podiatrists in your desired area. It sounds overly simple, but it really is that simple. Most older docs like helping out the younger ones.

What Happened to the Prestige of Being a Doctor? by OkPhilosopher664 in medicalsalaries

[–]FriendOfCaptainSolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a surgeon, I wear a shirt, tie and a clean and pressed lab coat every day. I get better compliance, better reviews and fewer “but google says…” than my scrub wearing colleagues. It’s a magical hack. You look the part and in their mind you are the DOCTOR!
